Tim Tebow was planning to speak at the First Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas, on April
28th but has now cancelled his appearance. America's well-known religious player in the
National Football League (NFL) tweeted last week that he had decided to cancel his appearance
"due to new information that has been brought to my attention.” Precisely what that "new
information" actually is remains unknown.
Tebow would have been part of a month long celebration by the First Baptist Church of
Dallas which recently completed a $130 million dollar building project. The massive undertaking
encompasses 5 blocks of downtown Dallas.
Pastor Robert Jeffress is the leader of the Dallas mega church and has been at the center
of controversies himself. The fundamentalist preacher has drawn heavy criticism for his
comments about homosexuality, Judaism, Catholicism and Mormonism. At the Values Voter Summit
in Washington in 2011, Jeffress told journalists that Mormonism was a cult. The Mormon Church
called the statement inaccurate.
Concerning sex, Jeffress has said that "homosexuality is a sin just like adultery is a sin, just
like I believe premarital sex is a sin, because it’s a deviation from God’s standard,
(…) God’s plan for sex is that (it) should be between a man and a woman in a marriage
relationship and any deviation from that is wrong.”
Jeffress called Islam and Mormonism "wrong" and "from the pit of Hell". He also had something
to say about Judaism as well when he sputtered that "you can't be saved being a Jew". Tebow
apparently is not interested in generating more controversy by associating with Jeffress
and his mega church.
Speaking to CNN by phone, Jeffress said that “Tim called me last night and explained
to me that because of some things going on in his personal life and his career he needed
to steer clear of controversy right now…" Tebow's cancellation will not stop Jeffress
from continuing with the church's plan to celebrate its new addition.
