Julian Assange's message
for the readers of Boitempo
The internet has become
the greatest threat to human civilization that we have ever known
over the last twenty years there have been to parallel developments
On the one hand
more knowledge
has been granted
to more people
than ever before.
That transfer knowledge
to the powerless
has made them more powerful.
The internet in that way
has been a tool of liberation and emancipation
On the other hand
hidden beneath the surface
more knowledge
about all of us
about global humanity, almost every person
in international civilization
has been collected
by international spy agencies sitting
on cross-border telecommunications
gaining access to institutions like Google, Facebook
collecting that information and giving it to those people
who already have
the greatest power
That transfer of knowledge
has been the greatest theft
or power
in human history
[Brazilian edition of Cypherpunks]
It is not the states that have become wrapped up in this system
It is Google, Facebook
and the other big internet companies as well

the future and freedom of the internet
