Tornadoes claim lives in Midwestern US states. From Friday through Sunday, May 22, more than
70 tornadoes tore across at least seven states, with 47 striking on Sunday. One person perished
in Kansas, another in Minnesota and at least 116 were killed in Missouri as a powerful
wind funnel cut a 6-mile wide swath of destruction through the town of Joplin. Noting the area's
extreme devastation, which included a nursing home where all the windows shattered and seven
were reported dead, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon dispatched the National Guard and emergency
rescue teams to begin immediately looking for survivors. Meanwhile, in other states
such as Kansas, Governor Sam Brownback issued a disaster declaration in 16 counties.
Sending her deep condolences and prayers, Supreme Master Ching Hai asked our nearby
Association members to please find out if any help is needed, and to also go if possible
to comfort the vulnerable, saying that financial aid is available for urgent necessities.
We are thankful for the initiatives of officials and all rescue teams working to ease the situation
for the storm-afflicted and for Supreme Master Ching Hai's loving concern. May such extreme
conditions subside as we act with greater benevolence toward each other and the environment
