IT WON'T HURT WHEN THE ECLIPSE BURNS YOUR EYEBALLS, SUNGLASSES ARE NOT ENOUGH!
People around the US are gearing up for what has been called the Great American Eclipse
as during the eclipse there is going be a 70-mile path from Oregon to South Carolina
that will be in darkness.
While it is something special, there have been some health warnings, that are bizarre.
SPIRITUAL SCIENCE RESEARCH FOUNDATION GIVES OUT ECLIPSE ADVICE The Spiritual Science Research
Foundation has been giving out health advice and warnings and some of the advice is very
strange indeed.
For instance, they have said that black energy might possess a person if they do not fast
on the day of the eclipse.
They also warned about taking a bath before eating food the following day.
This cannot be taken too seriously though as this comes from the same people that say
that the solar eclipse is caused when ghosts eat away at the sun.
They also believe that the same ghosts will eat up tamas, rajas and sattva, which are
the three forces of nature if you follow Ayurveda yoga.
The foundation warns that a solar eclipse can help to reduce digestive powers and so
they recommend that people only eat light meals.
They also believe that the energy levels of people will be eclipsed for two or three days
before the eclipse and when it has passed.
NASA GIVE ADVICE TOO, YOU CAN GO BLIND NASA has also spoken up and given advice.
The Associate Administrator for NASA Science Mission Directorate, Thomas Zurbuchen, said
that people should not look straight at the eclipse without using the proper eye protection
as it can blind people.
He was talking at a press conference and said that no one should ever look straight at the
sun, whether there is an eclipse or not.
He went on to say that the human eye has many parts and the cornea, which is at the front,
should be thought of as being a window.
He said that looking through the cornea is just the same as looking through a window
at home and the sun can burn it and eventually go on to form cataracts.
When there is an eclipse of the sun more people look at it and they tend to think that they
are safe due to the sun being partially covered up.
Albert Pang, the optometrist, said that when you look straight at a solar eclipse and do
not use the proper eye protection the retina can be damaged permanently.
Within just minutes the radiation from the sun could burn the retina.
Exposure of it to intense visible light causes damage to the cone cells and light-sensitive
rods.
The light then triggers complex chemical reactions in the cells and this damages the ability
for them to be able to respond to visual stimulus and in some cases may even destroy them.
The damage made is permanent, and there is no cure.
Pang said that it is along the lines of using a hot iron to burn the eyes.
NASA said that the high level of near-infrared radiation causes heating that is able to cook
the tissue that has been exposed.
He went on to say that due to the fact that the retina does not have pain receptors, you
would not even know the retina had been burned as it would not hurt, for many hours after
the damage had been done.
SUNGLASSES ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH PROTECTION FOR WATCHING ECLIPSE Pang went on to say that
people should not be frightened of watching the eclipse, but they had to wear the correct
eye protection and sunglasses were not good enough protection.
He said that lightweight specs that are made from cardboard along with solar filters could
block out the infrared lights and UV along with around 99% of the visible light and this
ensures that none of the radiation of the sun causes any damage to the eye.
The filters are said to be about 100,000 times darker than typical sunglasses, and they are
good value at only $1.
He also said that 1,500 libraries were giving away the glasses and to make sure that they
were ISO 12312-2 certified.
Pang recommended that people wear them on top of the eyes and to make sure that there
were not askew.
Sunblock should also be used he said as while outside watching the eclipse people could
catch the sun.
Water and painkillers were also advised as after being in the sun for so long and then
going into an air conditioned room can cause a headache.
Warnings have been given to heavy traffic on the roads, and Hopkinsville in Kentucky,
which is said to be the greatest point of the eclipse, will have around 100,000 guests.
By following the warnings people in the regions lucky enough to be able to catch the great
eclipse of the USA should remain safe and well.
