Maya Gabeira came in search of the biggest waves in the world
and managed to catch the biggest wave of her life
An injury at the end of the descent, prevented her from finishing the wave
and thus beat her own record.
What went wrong was that I caught a big wave
In the 3rd or 4th bump, I felt my ankle, I fell and broke my ankle
In this wave, I still took the wash from the wave
heavy, but I was well, climbed well,
I was conscious, took a deep breath, did my breathing technique
I went for the 2nd
and in the 3rd was actually when,
I was a long time under water in the 2nd wave,
when I climbed after the 3rd wave, I didn't know where I was exactly
I just felt something in my chest
that was when my safety vest exploded
I was without a life vest in the 3rd wave
which was a very large wave, and with the impact on my chest,
I was deep under water for along time
and my vision went black
after the fall, Maya went through difficult moments, until she was rescued by Carlos Burle
The force of the sea left the Brazilian drifting
later she lost consciousness
all feared the worst
The main issue is that I
somehow I have adapted to be four minutes
without breathing
for me to get in an advanced stage
of oxygen deficit, it takes more than a person
that has never done this type of training
and all the sensations that I had
in water, between waves and one wash and the other
inspirations that I did, they were all automatic
because we train to have these automatic reactions
and I knew exactly all the processes
that were happening
Maya is in Portugal integrated in a team of four Brazilian surfers of giant waves
all of them were surprised
by the conditions of Nazaré's Canyon.
it's one of the most difficult conditions in the world
not only the wave out there, that already compares to waves like
Cortes Bank or elsewhere like Mavericks, when it's huge and giant
but these places have a moment when the wave stops, and you are in a channel
and here the danger never ends, it sometimes worsens
because of the rocks, the sand and the wave's break.
Maya says that this was undoubtedly
the biggest wave of her life and probably
never going to catch a wave of that dimension
she was injured, took a great fright
but says without reservation that it was worth it
It was worth it, I would do it again!
