Hi! My name is Dan and I’m with Expert Village. Today we’re going to talk about how to select
a safe location for your campfire. You want to look for durable surfaces, like sand or
dirt with very little organic material. You also want level ground that you’ll be able
to move around the location of the fire easily. Also, if you fin a site with a preexisting
fire ring, that’s probably going to be the best to use because it’s already been impacted,
and the fire ring will help prevent the fire from spreading. Other considerations are overhanging
branches that can conceivably catch fire and spread to the canopy of the forest. Also,
in winter you want to look, even if it’s quite high above you, for snow pack in the
trees. After a while, the heat from your fire can melt this and the snow can fall dousing
your fire, which in case of emergency, if you’re having an emergency fire, your fire
going out isn’t going to help you very much. Those are a few of the considerations that
you want to take into account when selecting your fire location.
