Rose Morelock: Hi! My name is Rose Morelock. I’m the Vice President of Operations for
Childrens Lighthouse. I’ve been in the educational childcare arena for about 35 years now. I’ve
been with Childrens Lighthouse since 2001. I’m here to take you on a quick tour of
our classrooms and tell you a little bit about Childrens Lighthouse and why it’s so special,
and why our rooms have waiting lists.
Let’s start with the A Beka curriculum board. When you walk into this center, we have this
board that describes our curriculum, the workbook they’re going to get and what they will
be learning. A Beka is a very strong phonetic curriculum. It is the reason why we have more
children in our schools than any of our competitors around us.
One of the measures that we take is security. We do have a keyless entry that a code is
given to the parent to get into the building. Then they go to the monitor and check their
child in.
Come this way and let’s do a tour. Of course, we have the offices for the center director
and the owners. Our centers are equipped with a kitchen where the food is prepared on a
daily basis for our children. We have the commercial refrigerators and freezer. We have
a work area. Lunch and two snacks are served from our kitchen on a daily basis.
We also have an infant bulletin board. That’s for our parents. That tells our parents what
theme our infants are working on. We use the Innovations curriculum. It also gives them
a snapshot of our menu and the concepts that the children are learning throughout the month.
This is our infant room. Each baby has their own crib. As you can see, we also have cameras
in the rooms. We have three cameras for each classroom. The parents are able to log on
from their computer and look into their child’s class. We do a lot of interactions with our
infants. We have a changing table where the teacher’s back is never to the children.
It’s away from the camera so the baby cannot be seen on camera.
We’re going to leave Room 1 and go down to Room 5 and see our little two-year-olds.
They’re about to eat lunch. They just came in from outside. This is a transition that
they’re doing before lunch. As you can see, we still have the learning wall in our classroom.
They do start learning the days of the week. They learn their phonics. They’re learning
numbers and shapes, preparing themselves to go onto the next level. Furniture is low to
the level of the children. We also have a hand washing area that they do wash hands
when they come in from outside and before lunch, where they can also drink. They have
their own bathroom as well, so that they do not have to leave the classroom for any reason
whatsoever. They’re in here all day.
Now we’re going to go to Room 9, which is our Pre-K class. As you can see, they’re
divided in discovery areas. We have a library center. We have a computer center. Each of
our classrooms also have a circle-time board. Every morning, the children do lessons at
the board with their teacher. Each classroom also has their own exit door that leads to
the outside that the children go outside. Also when we have scheduled fire drills and
disaster drills, we use this door to exit from.
We provide in-service days for our teachers. It’s important to Childrens Lighthouse that
our teachers are very well trained. As you can see, this is happening. We provide two
in-service days of 15 hours per year of training. Actually, this teacher, Ms. Barbara, has received
several awards throughout the years that she’s been with us.
We know that this is a very difficult decision for you as a parent. We do everything we can
to give you peace of mind throughout the day while you’re at work and your little one
is here.
That was our Pre-K class. Now we’re going to go take a tour of our after-school program.
We do pick up children from the elementary schools and bring them back here in the afternoon
where they get a snack and do their homework. During the summer and school holidays, they’re
with us as well.
This is where our after-school children come in. As you can see, we have it geared for
after-school children. We have tables so they can sit down and do their homework. Parents
love that they do their homework before they go home. We also do a little bit of tutoring
there. We also have computers with educational games. We have the big-screen TV where they
play Wii, Nintendo.
This summer, we have a really cool project that the children are working on at all of
our centers, and that is the Flat Stanley Program. I don’t know if you’re aware
of Flat Stanley, but he goes on trips with the children when they go on vacation. Then
they come back with stories. Flat Stanley is a big hit with our school-aged children
and we do it every summer.
We have age-appropriate playgrounds. We have three of them, one for toddlers and twos,
one for our preschool children and one for our after-school children. They also come
with shade structures.
