The object of any good shipboard spa should always be relaxation. Onboard Cunard’s Queen Mary 2, an entire room filled with floor-to-ceiling windows does just that, with plush loungers, soft music, and refreshments just steps away.
The relaxation room looks out over the Promenade Deck, but the windows have been tinted to allow you to see out without anyone being able to see in.
Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 was built and designed primarily to sail the rugged North Atlantic, so the Canyon Ranch SpaClub is situated lower down, on Promenade Deck 7.
Queen Mary 2 boasted the first-ever Canyon Ranch Spa at sea, the focal point of which was a soothing hydrotherapy pool.
The hydrotherapy pool aboard Queen Mary 2 also gives way to a series of aromatic steam rooms, saunas, and tepidarium-style ceramic loungers. There’s even a Russian Ice Bath: ice chips you can rub over your skin to cool off.
No shipboard spa is complete without treatment rooms, and those aboard Queen Mary 2 do not disappoint.
Situated one deck up, the Canyon Ranch Spa also includes an attractive salon that wraps around the forward superstructure of Queen Mary 2.
Running a spa of this scale is hard work. The talented men and women of the Canyon Ranch SpaClub aboard Queen Mary 2.
It’s not only luxury cruise ships that offer pampering spa services and amenities. Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Breeze introduced the line’s largest spa to-date when it entered service in 2012.
Introduced onboard Carnival Dream, Carnival Magic and Carnival Breeze, the Cloud 9 Spa is the perfect place to unwind after a day of Fun Ship cruising.
The Cloud 9 Spa aboard Carnival Breeze features one of the line’s most attractive thalassotherapy pools, situated within an airy enclosure overlooking the bow of the ship.
Just aft of the thalassotherapy pool are special tepidarium and lanconium rooms that feature heated ceramic loungers.
Depending on which room you choose, the ceramic loungers are heated to varying temperatures. Nearly every room is bordered by gorgeous floor-to-ceiling windows.
Carnival’s Cloud 9 Spa even comes complete with a quiet relaxation room.
If you love the Spa experience, guests can book one of Carnival Breeze’s dedicated Spa Staterooms that features a number of amenities, from upgraded toiletries to more soothing décor.

Rather than offering up a massive thalassotherapy pool, the MSC Aurea Spa aboard MSC Divina breaks things down into smaller, whirlpool-style tubs.
The real “wow” feature of the MSC Aurea Spa aboard MSC Divina comes with her treatment rooms.
Here, you can indulge in a variety of relaxing treatments – all without ever taking your eyes off of the beautiful sea vistas passing outside.
MSC Divina makes her home year-round in the Caribbean, sailing every week from the Port of Miami.
If you have kids, there’s a good chance you’ve cast an eye towards the ships of Disney Cruise Line, like the sleek Disney Dream.
Although the aroma showers (each with their own individual scents and sounds) reflect the air of whimsy that Disney is known for, make no mistake about it: this is designed to be an adult’s oasis from Mickey and Minnie.
Disney’s Senses Spa aboard Disney Dream pampers adults with a full Thermal Suite, among other features.
With an adjacent whirlpool tub separated by a wall of glass windows, the temptation to stay here all day is very real.
Disney offers spa treatments for adults, but also for teens aged 13 to 17.

While most cruise lines will charge you a fee for accessing their thalassotherapy pools and thermal suites, one cruise line doesn’t charge you a nickel – and their spa is one of the best at sea.
A cruising masterpiece, the Nordic Spa aboard Viking Cruises brand-new Viking Star sets the bar high for the premium cruise industry. It features a massive thalassotherapy pool and a separate hot tub for those who prefer their bubbles jetted.
The Thalassotherapy pool is relaxing even when the jets aren’t turned on, and there are plenty of nooks and crannies to enjoy some quiet time to yourself.
The pool even features its own fire elements at the far end; a decidedly original touch.
Surrounding the Nordic Spa’s pool are rows of plush loungers that are perfect for relaxing in, either to enjoy a refreshing spa drink or a good book.
One such row of loungers in the Nordic Spa offers a tantalizing glimpse at one of Viking Star’s more unique features.
Viking Star’s Nordic Spa features its very own Snow Room, with real flakes of the white stuff fluttering down gently from the ceiling. If you can stand the cold, you can complete your traditional Scandinavian spa ritual.

Viking Star isn’t the only ship to feature an elaborate spa with a seemingly unending array of specialised relaxation rooms. Say hello to the Salt Room aboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Breakaway.
Launched in 2013, Norwegian Breakaway’s Mandara Cruise Spa occupies a commanding perch directly above the ship’s navigation bridge.
Featuring soft mood lighting and spanning the width of the entire superstructure, the Thermal Suite in the Mandara Spa aboard Norwegian Breakaway is one of the most spacious afloat.
It also looks every bit as nice in real-life as it does in the press photos, with heated loungers situated facing forward over the bridge of the ship. On a rainy afternoon in New York, it’s easy to get lulled in here.
Just behind the heated ceramic loungers are dozens of plush lounge chairs.
Of course, no visit to the Mandara Spa aboard Norwegian Breakaway is complete without a dip in the hydrotherapy pool.
If you want to take your spa experience aboard Norwegian Breakaway to an entirely different level, book one of the dedicated Spa Staterooms onboard.
Norwegian Breakaway isn’t the only Norwegian Cruise Line ship to make our list. Its smaller fleetmate, Norwegian Pearl, substantially upped the spa game for the cruise line when it entered service in 2006.
Overlooking the ship’s navigation bridge, Norwegian Pearl’s Mandara Spa features His-and-Hers saunas situated on the port and starboard side bridge wing overhangs, respectively.
These gender-specific areas on the extreme right or left hand side of the ship also feature private showers, cooling pools, whirlpool baths, and steam and sauna rooms.
Running along the centerline of the ship, facing forward, is the oversized Thermal Suite.
In addition to regular lounge chairs, a set of heated ceramic loungers are positioned along the walls leading to.
the spacious hydrotherapy pool.
Surrounded by plush seating options, the aftermost end of the hydrotherapy pool features a grate with jetted bubbles that fire up from underneath, creating a relaxing environment that encourages you to linger longer.
The Mandara Spa aboard Norwegian Pearl is also featured on its sister-ships, Norwegian Jewel, Jade and Gem.
While the spas aboard the Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Pearl are some of our favorites, it’s hard to beat the Greenhouse Spa & Salon that is found aboard Holland America’s Vista and Signature-Class ships that include Zuiderdam, Noordam, and Nieuw Amsterdam, to name a few.
The entrance to the Greenhouse Spa is always an understated affair, which only serves to enhance the elegance of the Thermal Suite and Hydrotherapy Pools onboard.
The Hydrotherapy pool aboard the Noordam. Each of Holland America Line’s ships features a similar pool, but with distinctive décor and colours. Surrounded by walls of glass and, in some instances, topped with a skylight, this room is an oasis tucked away in the middle of the Lido Deck.
Surrounding the hydrotherapy pool are banks of plush loungers. If you fall asleep here, don’t worry: it’s pretty common!
The companion to the Hydrotherapy pool is the Thermal Suite, situated just out the door and on the starboard side of the Greenhouse Spa.
A set of heated tiled loungers is positioned facing the windows, which look out over the ocean and scenery below. This becomes an especially popular place during scenic cruising on voyages to Alaska. Aromatic steam rooms are cleverly tucked away on either side of the Thermal Suite.
If you like your relaxation outdoors, you can book your own little private deck oasis with one of Holland America Line’s private cabanas.
Although it's half the size of most Holland America ships, Seabourn’s Seabourn Odyssey, Quest and Sojourn include some of the most indulgent spas at sea.
Seabourn Odyssey’s Spa at Seabourn is anchored by this inviting hydrotherapy pool, with jetted water that massages you as you relax.
Adjacent to the hydrotherapy pool are comfortable loungers, each separated by wispy fabrics that create a feeling of privacy without taking away from the openness of the spa.
Directly above the hydrotherapy pool is the Spa Terrace, overlooking the ocean.
Of course, for the ultimate indulgence, you’ll want to book the dedicated Spa Penthouse Suite.
You can even reserve your own afternoon in one of the indulgent Spa Villas onboard Seabourn’s elegant fleet.
The spas aboard Seabourn’s ships proved to be so popular that the line discovered guests were sailing with Seabourn almost exclusively for their spa amenities.
We finish our photo-tour with another luxurious ship, and another spa operated by Canyon Ranch: the Canyon Ranch SpaClub aboard Oceania’s Marina and its sister-ship, Riviera.
The Owner’s Suite aboard Oceania’s Marina sets the bar suitably high. With accommodations like these, the onboard spa offerings have to be top-notch.
The welcoming Reception Area at the Canyon Ranch SpaClub aboard Oceania’s Marina is a retreat in and of itself, with comfortable seating, refreshing drinks, and excellent service.
The relaxation room, with its heated ceramic loungers and abundance of light, feels every bit like the private enclave it should be.
Concierge and Suite Guests are welcomed to complimentary access to the onboard Spa Terrace, overlooking the bow of the ship.
Just like the rest of the Oceania experience, the Canyon Ranch SpaClub at sea will treat you to an unforgettable vacation.
