>> Sometimes when patients come to see us,
they've seen different doctors, different specialists.
What I like to do is discuss the illness with the patient, the specific infection.
I like to give options for treatment, including different therapies and discuss the risks
and benefits of each of these with the patient.
I think once patients understand more about the infection and the different options,
they feel better about making decisions for their healthcare.
For many of the diseases, we have antibiotics and antifungal therapies available.
And many of the diseases that we do see are curable.
Some of the diseases are more chronic diseases,
in which case we offer ongoing therapies when available.
I think the research of University of Wisconsin helps the patients
and doctors for a variety of reasons.
We do have quite a bit of training in the areas where the research is ongoing.
So we see more patients with these types of infections, and we hear the latest updates
on therapies from the other physicians studying the infections.
For many patients that we see, they're able to improve greatly
on antibiotics and different therapies.
So for some patients, after treatment,
they can just have remarkable improvement in their quality of life.
