Business Intelligence jobs are very much focused on interpreting large amounts of data and
helping organisations know where they are in the marketplace and also where they need
to be. Organisations amass large amounts of market
information, be that from customer data, shopping behaviours, but also from competitor organisations,
so companies need to see how they stack up in the market against their competitors.
All of this data needs to come into a central resource and a business intelligence analyst
will be the person that interprets all of that data and then creates recommendations
and strategic objectives for the business to help a company move itself forward in the
market, move itself ahead of its competition, but also ensure that it's marketing itself
in the right way to its customers. People in this kind of line of work do play
a very key role in a business. They're often very visible, often very highly-valued because
they do directly contribute to the future strategy and shape the future strategy of
an organisation. The roles tend to be very interesting as well,
because you're very often at the forefront of new trends and new opportunities in the
market because you're out there assimilating all of this data and then interpreting it
and then feeding that back to a company. So, demand for people with these skills is
very high so if you're looking to get into a niche within the digital space then this
may be an area of digital that could be of interest.
Business Intelligence jobs will probably suit people who would say that they have a highly-analytical
mind-set. Also people, within relevance to digital, who have a genuine passion and interest
for the industry. It's very important to keep on top of latest
trends in the market and an understanding of where a business is likely to go and need
to compete or where its competitors are likely to go and what direction they're heading.
Somebody that enjoys digging around through lots and lots of data to try and identify
and spot trends and identify a competitive edge for their own company.
Also, a business intelligence analyst will need to know and have an appreciation of a
lot of tools within the market like Double Click, Site Analyst, Tea Leaf of course.
So, from a degree and education background, maybe degrees such as psychology, business-type
degrees or any of the sciences would lend themselves very well to this area of the digital
space.
