We are a group of people that meet once a month... 2 00;00;08;09 00;00;14;20 ... to make trips, and to document, through photography... 3 00;00;14;28 00;00;18;26 ... the culture, the arts, the traditions, the lifestyle... 4 00;00;19;00 00;00;21;02 ... here in the San Francisco Valley region... 5 00;00;21;09 00;00;25;22 ... and also in the deserts of Brazil's northeast region in general. 6 00;00;55;25 00;00;59;10 Photographic Journeys 7 00;01;00;05 00;01;03;13 Everywhere I look, I see photography! 8 00;01;03;13 00;01;07;23 When you go on the Journeys, you meet the world... the nature... 9 00;01;07;23 00;01;12;07 I allways bring my three kids! It unites our family! 10 00;01;12;07 00;01;16;07 That's why it's priceless! It's wonderful! 11 00;01;18;18 00;01;20;04 It's a celebration to photography! 12 00;01;20;04 00;01;24;10 It's hard to meet or make friends in the everyday life... 13 00;01;24;10 00;01;31;05 So once a month we go out on the Journeys to do that! It's a party! 14 00;01;31;05 00;01;35;12 - So it's more than just about photos? - Photos are the reason... 15 00;01;35;12 00;01;39;28 ... a reason to meet old and new friends! That's what it's about! 16 00;01;39;28 00;01;44;29 I heard about it on a radio interview Marcus gave... 17 00;01;44;29 00;01;48;29 ... and he said that you don't need any special of fancy equipment... 18 00;01;49;04 00;01;54;20 We live in this rich region that we barely even know properly! 19 00;01;54;20 00;01;59;29 Marcus came from another part of the country to show us our lands! 20 00;02;18;18 00;02;20;29 When I came up with the idea of the Journeys... 21 00;02;20;29 00;02;23;21 ... I doubted if anyone would be interested in them... 22 00;02;23;21 00;02;25;22 ... if there would even be a second time! 23 00;02;25;22 00;02;28;26 I never immagined that people would like it so much! 24 00;02;28;26 00;02;33;29 The group grew a lot! We went on the radio, the news, the TV... 25 00;02;33;29 00;02;36;02 ... we got a lot of attention! 26 00;02;40;10 00;02;46;08 Today there are about 160 people that participate in our discussions... 27 00;02;46;08 00;02;50;11 There is absolutely no competition or show-offs among us! 28 00;02;50;11 00;02;53;23 ...which is really comforting! 29 00;02;53;23 00;03;00;04 Today, I see some real poetry being made with photography... 30 00;03;00;04 00;03;03;15 ... by the members of the group! 31 00;03;03;20 00;03;08;15 I make all the arrangements. The itineraries of the trips... 32 00;03;08;15 00;03;14;02 ... where we eat, sleep, how long we stay in each place, the transportation. 33 00;03;14;06 00;03;17;26 This is the pre-production, along with all the divulgation, and all... 34 00;03;17;29 00;03;23;25 Then the Journey can be about 4 to 5 hours long, if it's near by... 35 00;03;23;25 00;03;27;16 ... or it can take up to 3 or 4 days, if it's a trip... 36 00;03;27;22 00;03;31;20 After that, we meet to discuss the our photos... 37 00;03;31;20 00;03;37;22 To see what everyone saw, to comment, analyze, ask questions about technic... 38 00;03;37;22 00;03;42;24 ... and this is the most important part... 39 00;03;42;24 00;03;48;03 ... it's when we see so many different points of view on the same thing! 40 00;03;48;03 00;03;56;17 I allways give some technical advice, but to analyse everybody's work... 41 00;03;56;17 00;03;59;04 ... is what enriches the most our perception! 42 00;03;59;04 00;04;03;10 We talk about what we saw and photographed... 43 00;04;03;10 00;04;07;14 ... and we see how we had so many different ways to see something! 44 00;04;07;14 00;04;12;22 We end up learning a lot from the others! 45 00;04;12;22 00;04;23;02 The best part is to share those moments with whoever wasn't there... 46 00;04;23;02 00;04;25;13 ... and that's pretty magical! 47 00;04;25;13 00;04;30;10 My favourite trip was the one at the Velho Chico dunes... 48 00;04;30;10 00;04;36;05 ... because you take that isolated place in the middle of the desert... 49 00;04;36;05 00;04;43;28 ... next to the Sobradinho dam, and it's a natural beauty! In the middle of nowhere! 50 00;04;44;27 00;04;49;07 The Journeys are one of the things I'm most attached to, socially. 51 00;04;49;07 00;04;51;19 The Journeys are going to grow more and more. 52 00;04;51;19 00;04;55;12 It's revealing our region! 53 00;04;56;15 00;04;59;20 It's 44ºC anywhere you go! 54 00;04;59;28 00;05;02;13 And they brought me the steak cold! 55 00;05;02;13 00;05;06;07 You might eat some good stuff, but allways bring some cookies with you! 56 00;05;06;12 00;05;09;21 One time saw some cowboys dancing... 57 00;05;09;21 00;05;12;22 ... and when we started taking pictures they got a bit angry... 58 00;05;12;22 00;05;16;23 ... so we told them we worked for the TV! And they were like "take my picture!" 59 00;05;16;23 00;05;18;29 No problem! 60 00;05;19;20 00;05;23;22 That's the kind of fun you can have on the Journeys! 61 00;05;23;22 00;05;31;06 It's a way of getting to know people better through the interest on photography 62 00;05;36;00 00;05;38;11 We camped on tents under some trees... 63 00;05;38;11 00;05;42;27 ... we had some inflatable mattresses with a few holes on them... 64 00;05;42;27 00;05;46;11 ... so we woke up during the night to fill them up, like "tch! tch! tch!"... 65 00;05;46;11 00;05;50;16 ... and people from another tent thought we were doing something else! 66 00;05;50;23 00;05;54;16 Some people started dating, some broke up... 67 00;05;54;16 00;05;57;11 ... maybe not just because of the Journeys... 68 00;05;57;11 00;06;00;25 ... but we do share some good and bad moments! 69 00;06;00;25 00;06;03;15 - My fun are the Journeys! 70 00;06;03;15 00;06;05;14 - Your fun? - It's where I have fun! 71 00;06;05;19 00;06;10;17 And when it's all over, and the photos are in the web... 72 00;06;10;17 00;06;13;05 ... then it's time to begin planing the next! 73 00;06;13;05 00;06;17;14 We made a few exhibitions that were important for us... 74 00;06;17;14 00;06;21;15 ... and I allways asked Marcus how we could repay society... 75 00;06;21;15 00;06;24;00 ... repay the people we photographed... 76 00;06;24;00 00;06;30;08 ... so we made a long "photo line" with this market's pictures... 77 00;06;30;08 00;06;33;20 ... and showed it in the same market! 78 00;06;33;20 00;06;36;01 We don't want to bring new culture... 79 00;06;36;01 00;06;40;06 We want to return culture to these people, in their own work place! 80 00;06;40;06 00;06;48;12 If it weren't for these people who are with us, going on the Journeys... 81 00;06;48;12 00;06;51;25 ... this entire group wouldn't have been like this, the way it is. 82 00;06;52;17 00;06;55;02 I didn't even know how to use the camera! 83 00;06;55;02 00;06;58;14 I thought nobody would pick any of my pictures for the website... 84 00;06;58;14 00;07;03;00 ... but they did! I was so happy to see one of my photos there! 85 00;07;03;00 00;07;08;29 In the begining, we went only to places close to our city Petrolina... 86 00;07;08;29 00;07;14;03 ... but today we go farther and farther on our trips! 87 00;07;14;03 00;07;16;17 Like this trip we are taking now! 88 00;07;17;04 00;07;22;16 I think it has a bright future!
