GIVE HIM SOME SLACK! GET OUT OF THERE! GET!

OF TENDING THE KILCHER HERD.
AS THE FAMILY'S SOLE SOURCE OF BEEF,
IT MUST BE PROTECTED AT ALL COSTS.
[ COWS MOOING ]
Atz: AROUND HERE, WHAT WE CALL THE HEAD OF THE BAY
IS A BIG VALLEY SURROUNDED BY MOUNTAINS AND HILLS
AND THE FOX RIVER, THE SHEEP RIVER,
AND THE BRADLEY RIVER
THAT ALL COME DOWN INTO THE VALLEY
AND INTO THE HEAD OF THE BAY.
IT'S WHERE THE LOCAL CATTLEMEN, INCLUDING MY BROTHER OTTO,
KEEP THEIR CATTLE FOR SUMMER GRAZING.
BY GOLLY, WE MAY HAVE SOMETHING.
I GOT TO TAKE A LOOK.
THERE'S A LOT OF POTENTIAL DANGER,
AND IT REALLY HELPS TO HAVE SOMEONE UP THERE
KEEPING AN EYE ON THE COWS.
THERE'S WOLVES AND BEARS AND PREDATOR PROBLEMS,
BUT THIS IS THEIR TERRITORY,
AND THEY'VE SLOWLY GOTTEN AWAY
FROM EATING MOOSE AND MOOSE CALVES
TO EATING BEEF.
THE COASTAL BIG BROWN BEARS
ARE PROBABLY THE BIGGEST CONCERN FOR CATTLEMEN.
THEY'RE A DIFFERENT ANIMAL FROM GRIZZLY BEAR
BECAUSE THEY'RE USED TO EATING FISH.
THEY'RE ALSO USED TO EATING MORE MEAT,
AND THEY'RE MORE DANGEROUS.
YOU PUT A BUNCH OF CATTLE IN BROWN BEAR COUNTRY,
AND SOME OF THE BROWN BEAR ARE GONNA KILL SOME OF THE CATTLE.
BUT I'M TRYING TO SAVE AS MANY AS I CAN.
HE'S BEEN CHEWED UPON.
YOU KNOW, THIS LOOKS LIKE A CALF.
SO, AT THIS STAGE,
YOU DON'T KNOW WHETHER IT WAS A BROWN BEAR OR A WOLF.
THEY DON'T LEAVE MUCH.
SOMETHING REALLY HAS BEEN TERRORIZING THEM,
AND I GOT TO FIGURE IT OUT.
YOU GO TO THE THOSE PLACES WHERE YOU CAN SEE TRACKS
ALONG THE SANDBARS AND RIVERBANKS.
SO, IT'S KIND OF LIKE BLANK PAPER.
IT'S KIND OF GETTING A NEWSPAPER WITH NOTHING ON IT,
AND PRETTY SOON, YOU START TO SEE HEADLINES.
PRETTY SOON, YOU KNOW, YOU START TO SEE,
"OH, IT LOOKS LIKE THIS SAME BIG BEAR
"HAS BEEN COMING UP AND DOWN HERE.
WE BETTER LOOK OUT."
WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THESE CROSSINGS --
THAT'S WHERE EVERYTHING CONVERGES.
CATTLE USE THEM, HORSES USE THEM,
AND THE BEARS USE THEM.
SO, THAT'S WHY I'M UP HERE, TO TRY TO DISCOURAGE THE BEARS
OR, BEST-CASE SCENARIO,
FIND THE BEAR OR BEARS THAT ARE KILLING THE COWS
AND CATCH THEM IN THE ACT.
NOW I WANT TO GO CHECK THE CATTLE
TO MAKE SURE NOTHING'S BEEN WOUNDED.
[ COWS MOOING ]
A LOT OF COWS AND CALVES TO GO THROUGH,
LOOK AT ONE BY ONE.
LOOKS LIKE THE BROWNIE GOT HIM RIGHT ON TOP,

GOT A PUNCTURE HOLE.
THAT'S WHAT THEY DO.
THE BEARS JUST JUMP ON FROM THE BACK JUST LIKE THIS,
AND THEN THEY JUST START SCRATCHING THE SHOULDERS OPEN
AND BITING UNTIL THEY GO DOWN.
SO, THAT CALF THERE --
IT'S OBVIOUS TO ME THAT ANOTHER COW FOUGHT OFF THE BEARS
BECAUSE THE BEAR WOULD HAVE HAD HIM.
THE OTHER COWS CAME TO HIS RESCUE AND SAVED THAT CALF.
SO, THIS GRIZZLY BEAR HAS BEEN KICKING SOME *** AROUND HERE,

SAME THING, EXCEPT THIS ONE ALSO HAS BIG CLAW MARKS ON ITS BUTT,
A BIG HOLE BETWEEN ITS SHOULDER BLADES.
ROPED THE CALF JUST TO GET A CLOSER LOOK AT IT.
YEAH, YOU...
WE CALL THIS LITTLE CALF 1308.
THAT'S THE TAG NUMBER ON ITS EAR.
OTTO AND CHARLOTTE BROUGHT HIM UP HERE
ON THE CATTLE DRIVE.
THAT IS CLASSIC CLAWS ON EACH SIDE,
TEETH IN THE MIDDLE.
JUST LIKE THIS, THEY GRAB AND CLIMB ON.
YOU KNOW?
THERE'S TWO PUNCTURES RIGHT ON TOP.
IT'S ALREADY GOT MAGGOTS IN IT THERE. THAT'S GOOD.
OH, YEAH. I LIKE TO SEE THOSE MAGGOTS IN THERE.
IF YOU'RE OUT THERE WITHOUT ANY MEDICINE,
THE VERY BEST THING THAT CAN HAPPEN IS WHAT HAPPENED.
THOSE FLIES LAY EGGS ON THE WOUNDS. BOOM.
THE MAGGOTS ARE CLEANING OUT THE DEAD FLESH.
SEE THAT COW? MAMA'S LICKING THAT BACK WOUND.
YEAH, SHE KNOWS WHAT TO DO.
AND PEOPLE MIGHT ASK,
"HOW CAN YOU SHOOT AN INNOCENT BROWN BEAR?"
WELL, I'LL TELL YOU.
YOU LOOK AT SOMETHING LIKE THIS --
HOLES IN A LIVE, LIVING CRITTER --
AND I AIN'T GONNA STAND BY
WHILE THE BROWN BEAR KILLS A POOR LITTLE CALF LIKE THIS.
Narrator: COMING UP ON "ALASKA: THE LAST FRONTIER"...

OVER THE 10-FOOT PIT.
[ ROPE CREAKS ]
[ THUD ]
OH [BLEEP]
[ Chuckling ] I THINK I NEED A STRONGER ROPE.
I'M GLAD THAT FIRST ROPE BROKE RIGHT WHEN I PICKED IT UP
BECAUSE IF IT HADN'T BROKEN THEN,
THEN MAYBE IT WOULD HAVE BROKE
AFTER I SWUNG IT AROUND THE CORNER,
AND IT WOULD HAVE FALLEN AND TUMBLED DOWN THE HILL
AND SMASHED TO PIECES.
THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN A REAL BUMMER.
OKAY.
LET'S TRY IT AGAIN HERE.
THIS IS A STRONGER ROPE, I THINK.
I WAS STILL SKEPTICAL AT THAT POINT.
I WAS WORRIED BECAUSE I WAS LIKE,
"MAN, MAYBE THIS THING IS A LOT HEAVIER
THAN I THOUGHT IT WAS ORIGINALLY."
JUST TRYING TO BE AS CAREFUL AS POSSIBLE
BECAUSE I PUT SO MUCH TIME AND ENERGY INTO THIS THING.
THE LAST THING I WANT TO HAVE HAPPEN IS TO DROP IT NOW
AND HAVE IT TIP OVER AND BREAK THE ROOF
AND ROLL DOWN THE DANG HILL.
SO, I REALLY TRIED TO GO AS SLOW AND METHODICAL AS POSSIBLE
BECAUSE THIS IS THE LAST STAGE, YOU KNOW?
I'M TRYING MY BEST TO JUST GET THE OUTHOUSE HOME SAFE
IN THIS LAST LITTLE PUSH HERE.
I WANT TO LIVE IN IT.
YEAH? YOU CAN VISIT IT EVERY DAY.
Eve: EIVIN WAS VERY SWEET
AND LET ME HAVE MY WAY WITH THE OUTHOUSE.
THERE ARE MOMENTS WHERE HE JUST GOES,
"NO. THIS IS NOT PRACTICAL. NICE IDEA."
BUT I HAVE TO SAY HE TRIES TO DO WHAT I'D LIKE
MORE OFTEN THAN NOT,
SO I FEEL LIKE I'M PRETTY LUCKY IN THAT WAY.
Eivin: SHE'S A LITTLE BIT DEMANDING
AS SHE SEEMS TO GET BIGGER WITH HER PREGNANCY.
SHE WANTS THINGS JUST SO EVEN MORE.
SO, WHATEVER I CAN DO TO MAKE HER HAPPY RIGHT NOW
IS PROBABLY THE BEST THING
'CAUSE I SURE AS HELL DON'T WANT TO MAKE HER MAD.

WHEN THEY'RE RUNNING AWAY FROM A BROWN BEAR.
BOOM -- CATTLE COMING STRAIGHT TOWARDS ME

I KNOW EVERYTHING I NEED TO KNOW.
THERE'S A BEAR OR THERE ARE BEARS CHASING THE HERD,

MAYBE IT'S COWS PROTECTING THEIR CALVES.
I DON'T KNOW THE DETAILS,
BUT I KNOW THERE'S A FIGHT GOING ON.
I GOT BULLETS IN MY POCKETS. I GOT BULLETS IN MY MOUTH.
Otto: HELL YEAH.
WE CAN GO PLACES WITH THIS COW BRA.
IT'S A GOOD START.
WE COULD GO WITH THE NURSING BRA,
OR WE COULD POP DOWN A COUPLE SNAPS
AND LET THE CALVES NURSE ON ONE SIDE, YOU KNOW?
BUT I DO THINK THAT I'D LIKE SOME KIND OF A HATCH
WHERE YOU DON'T HAVE TO TAKE THE WHOLE THING OFF.
MIGHT BE KIND OF HOT.
BUT I'M NOT SO SURE ABOUT THE WHITE LACE
BECAUSE IT WOULD GET DIRTY.
I'M KIND OF THINKING MORE LIKE RED.
I DON'T KNOW.
MAYBE SOME BLACK LACE FOR THOSE NAUGHTY DAYS.
