a federal court struck down FCC
net neutrality rules this is really really bad news as the verge is
reporting
a federal appeals court has struck down important segments of the FCC's open
Internet rules
determining that the agency doesn't have the power to require
internet service providers to treat all traffic equally
the DC Circuit Court has ruled on Verizon the FCC
a challenge to the net neutrality rules that were first put in place in 2010
vacating the FCC's anti-discrimination
and anti blocking policies though it preserved some disclosure requirements
that Verizon opposed in other words
carriers can make some traffic run faster
or block other services but they do have to tell
subscribers this is really a big problem we're going to be had doing an interview
about this next week Louis
this really means that I don't now for
to give you an example now that Comcast owns NBC
Comcast legally could slow down your connection when accessing a competing
service like for example
Netflix oh hey yeah you wanna cancel cable TV just keep your internet service
and get your videos in TV shows and movies from Netflix pine
but the video connection with the internet connection will be slow down so
drastically
that the videos will be grainy you'll have to read but for all the time
all of that this is a huge blow
two alternatives to corporate media
as well as to preserve this is like Netflix because
it is yet another obstacle where internet-based shows
can be subject to longer loading times or other disincentives to choose those
media outlets over mainstream so-called mainstream
of course we know not actually mainstream media outlets and this is
this is just terrible this is this is horrible news yeah
really bad news I I hope somehow we can reverse this bites
if this stands and an this is
now widely accepted we have to hope that
that that free enterprise and capitalism work and that
certain providers whilst will be the ones you stand out and say
hey where the ones you have to come to you we're not slowing down anything
you know maybe it will become something somewhat of a marketing tool that dead
customers could rally around or something that's a good point right and
I
you know I i mean i of and the only company I can think of that will be the
people who do that
is Google I with Google Fiber and and but thats
you that's not going to be in most cities for a very long time
an increasingly people are concerned about Google given the
did the data and privacy issues that are happening so yeah I think the FCC
actually made a mistake
the FCC needs to redefine internet service providers as
common carriers at this point Louis we have to just realized that
the Internet is what phone use to be at a certain point
or it's beyond even what television was at a certain point it is becoming more
by utility
and it should be considered a common carrier which would completely redefine
this entire thing and up and
a lot of the problems that we're having
