Hey crew!
Have you ever felt *** about your body?
Of course you have! Why do I even ask?
Today we're gonna delve into some intense stuff.
So grab your cup of diet water
and join me for an examination of bodies,
beauty and self-esteem.
The mirror is our obsession
and our bathroom scales are the new crack.
All over the country, you'll find women weighing themselves
weekly, daily, hourly
starving themselves, working out until they collapse.
They undergo Botox injections and *** jobs.
They draw themselves in tanning beds
willing to forgo the risks of cancer for that perfect summer glow.
They spend hundreds of thousand dollars often that they don’t have
on makeup products to hide their flaws and make them look younger,
clothing that would be more flattering
and diet pills to help them drop extra weight.
By the 1st grade, 42% of girls want to be thinner.
35% of them end up being on at least one diet
by the time they're 12 years old.
What the f*** is going on here?
The media is our druglord, they'll tell you :
If you could just drop 20 pounds, you’d have everything :
awesome sex, a hot boyfriend, money, success
and everyone will adore you.
But I mean, since when does modifying your body
makes you a less *** person?
Since the media owned your soul, that’s when.
Everyday, you’re bombarded by about 5000 advertisements
and 1 in 3 of these are about your appearance.
Say you’re 18 years old,
that’s at least 13 million images telling you what to look like.
Holy *** !
No wonder 8 million women have an eating disorder
and nearly all of them have poor self-esteem.
Who wouldn't?
The real problem comes back to the fact
that these images that we’re bombarded with are not real.
But they're played off like they are.
How many of us can open a magazine and be like :
"Yeah, that totally looks like me!"
Yeah, no, none of us. And you know what ?
It doesn’t look like them either.
Airbrushing, photoshop, special filters galore!
You know why else we don’t look like that ?
The uber thin body type portrayed by women in the media
only affects 5% of the population.
And the standards are only get tighter.
20 years ago, models weighed 8% less than a healthy weight
and now they weigh 23% less than a healthy weight.
Not only this but models are overwhelmingly young and white.
This only perpetuates ageism and racism.
Do not want.
Why are they doing this to me?
It’s all about money, baby!
By presenting an ideal that’s nearly impossible to achieve
and even harder to maintain,
the diet and cosmetic industry is ripping a lot of dough.
And it’s no accident that youth is increasingly promoted
because even if you don’t need to lose weight,
well, you’re gonna get old sooner or later!
The diet industry alone makes 100 billion dollars a year
on temporary weight loss products.
When you're factoring cosmetic surgery, tanning beds,
tooth whitening, makeup, hair products, nail polish…
Oh my god, the list goes on forever!
Awareness about what’s going on is step 1 to fixing it
and step 2 is to stop buying the ***.
And I don’t just mean buying stuff but buying ideas too.
Everytime you catch yourself with a negative attitude
that comes from the media,
check yourself
and put yourself back in touch with the reality of the situation.
As a women, this is something that strongly affected me my entire life
and it’s a long process trying to undo all the damage
that’s been done to my thinking.
What I’ve been doing is slowly eliminating
all the oppressive practices from my life
that only served to *** my wallet
and rob my self-esteem.
I shave my legs less, I barely every buy new clothing,
I have just one generic cleanser to clean my face
cause that’s all I need.
I've slowly been wearing less and less make up
and I think that one day,
I’ll be able to walk around with no make up at all
and feel comfortable with myself.
But it’s a work in progress
and I had to be conscious of it everyday.
Not only about how I think about myself
but how I think about and treat others in regards to beauty.
The more and more the fog clears for me,
the more I truly appreciate how beautiful bodies actually are.
Alright everyone, have a nice week!
I’ll be doing more videos about body image
including how body image affects males in the future.
Peace in!
