Emergency response crews were called to a Louisiana chemical plant Thursday morning
after it exploded.
State police say the explosion at the Williams Olefins plant started a fire and that it's
contained in the plant. (Via WAFB)
Injuries have been reported, but it's unclear how many people were hurt.
"Hazmat is on the scene. Multiple roadway closures. Police saying it's a largely industrial
area not many residents within a mile and all industrial." (Via MSNBC)
According to the company's website, the plant produces around 1.3 billion pounds of ethylene
— which is extremely flammable and easily ignited.
WDSU reports a one-mile evacuation is recommended in all directions if the substance is on fire.
