My freezer is cold but my fridge is not! Do you have any idea why?
One possibility is that the compressor motor. If that isn’t running, the freezer may still
be cold but the fridge has warmed up.
I think the motor is still running.
Verify that the condenser fan is running. And clean the condenser coils, because if
they are dirty, the fridge will be the first to literally lose its cool.
How do I do that?
A scrub brush or a vacuum cleaner will work.
I certainly don’t want to do all that work. There are dust bunnies evolving into dust
zombies back there.
Cleaning them is a good idea, even if it isn’t the cause, because it will improve the fridge’s
efficiency. Though the fridge controls may be broken.
Let’s save that as a last resort.
Make sure the kids didn’t turn up the temperature in the fridge. Or someone may be leaving the
fridge door open a lot.
I know that isn’t the problem.
How much food do you have in the fridge and freezer? If the freezer is stuffed, that will
help keep it cold, while a lot of food in the fridge will cause it to take longer to
cool down.
We do stock up, but not that much.
If you have a self-defrosting fridge, the blower fan may not be running, preventing
the fridge from cooling enough.
How does the freezer fan’s failure cause a fridge not to stay cold?
If ice builds upon on the evaporator coil, it can insulate the coil. Then it doesn’t
do as good a job cooling off the fridge.
I didn’t know evaporator coils could literally get frozen.
And you could verify that the piping isn’t crimped. If it is, refrigerant may not be
flowing properly.
Now I’m back to calling a tech.
At least you have the option of putting ice from the freezer in the fridge to keep the
food from spoiling.
I’d rather have an excuse to eat all the ice cream melting in the freezer.
