ThingLink is a website that allows you to turn a picture into a set of clickable hot-spots.
In this ThingLink picture, I have linked multiple resources regarding sonnets, and have grouped
them based on various criteria. Sonnets are poems that meet a very specific set of requirements,
and your task is to click through each of the hot-spots and educate yourself about sonnets
and their structure.
The first hot spot is in the middle, and deals with the history of sonnets.
The second set of hot-spots is marked with red circles. Here, you will get an overview
of the two major types of sonnets: Italian, also known as Petrarchan, and English, also
known as Shakespearean. Our focus will be on Shakespearean sonnets, but you will need
to be able to recognize both kinds.
The third set of hot-spots is marked by lower-case "i" icons, and deals with the meter of sonnets.
If you are not familiar with identifying and marking poetic meter, these three hot-spots
will help you develop your understanding.
The fourth hot-spot deals with the sonnet's volta. The volta is very important, and can
make or break your interpretation of a sonnet
The fifth and final set of hot-spots ties everything together. Meter, the volta, structure,
and rhyme scheme are all shown on individual images. If you are unsure of how to identify
and label rhyme scheme, please look closely at the sonnets on this bullet to puzzle out
the standard rhyme scheme for the Shakespearean sonnet.
