Christmas on The Border - Texas parks and wildlife [official]

((stomping, music, whistling, yelling)) Narration: At Fort Leaton State Historical Site, folks from both sides of the border celebrate a centuries-old tradition. [child] La Posada. [ Luis] La Posada is a Mexican traditional Christmas celebration. It entails the re-enactment of the *** Mary and Joseph. And they go door to door asking for a place to stay overnight. ((opening smoky pit)) Narration: Everyone in town gets involved in the celebration. After food and festivities, the audience breaks into two groups to sing the Posada song while a priest leads the procession. ((singing)) Narration: En nombre del cielo os pido pasada. (English translation) In the name of heaven I beg you for lodging. [Man] It’s not just the song. You don’t want to call it a play or a skit but it’s just a complete presentation and I think it’s real nice. Narration: Posada literally means Inn. And true to the story, Mary and Joseph are finally allowed a place to rest. ((Singing)) Dichosa la casa, que abriga este dia. (English translation) Fortune the home that shelters this day. [Priest] (Spanish translation) The Posada is a presentation for the Navidad. ((Pinata busts)) Narration: Also part of tradition is the breaking of the pinata, representing the seven deadly sins. Once defeated, out come the fruits and candies. [Tony] Fort Leaton here is known to exist since back in the mid-1700s and religion was always you know part of the people back then as well as right now.
