Right now we're at the Yemassee train depot
and the depot has always been the center of town.
The depot restoration was the Yemassee Revitilazition Corporation's first major project
and we basically selected it because, it is the center of town.
It used to be the processing point for Marines that were going to Parris Island
so there was a huge amount of travel through this area.
Not to mention the fact that the railroad industry was also a lot busier
than it is now. It's still a stop for Amtrak, CSX still runs through this railroad.
However, it's definitely slowed. So the building itself
sort of
came to disrepair and it was a little bit decrepid and needed some upgrades.
So, the YRC with the town of Yemassee pitched in to redo the train depot
With the hopes that
it will open up business based in uh... in the downtown area.
We really want to keep the history intact
We really want to keep the integrity of the downtown area and keep the look of Yemassee
while at the same time
boosting economic development in the area.
Yemassee is very dedicated to the preservation of their history, the Marine Corps history
is a, is a big one for this area
and even though the Marines still don't pass through this area, on any weekend
you'll have people driving on seventeen, ninety-five, that will stop off so they can
see where they first came to the Marine Corps.
