Using a Canon Hv30 Video Camera

In this video, we're going to discuss how to operate the
Canon HV-30 video camera.
Topics we will cover include powering the camera,
using mini DV tapes, setting the camera's format,
recording and reviewing footage,
and attaching the camera to a tripod.
The camera can be powered by one of two ways.
The first way is by using the camera's power adapter.
To do so, begin by plugging the power cable
into the power brick.
Next, plug the cable's silver tip into the lower right side
of the back of the camera.
Finally, plug the other end of the power cable into
an available wall outlet.
The other way to power the camera is by using
one of the camera's batteries.
There are two types of batteries that are available
for the Canon HV-30.
There is the standard capacity battery which can power the
camera for approximately one hour, and there is the
extra capacity battery which can power the camera for
approximately two hours.
To attach the battery, make sure that the three metal
plates on the back of the battery are pointing up.
Line up the battery parallel to the back of the camera
and slide it up.
If you have both the battery and the power adapter hooked up to
the camera, the power adapter will charge the battery even
while it's recording footage.
This camera records footage on mini DV tapes.
These tapes can be purchased in the Union Bookstore
or at any local Walmart.
We recommend purchasing Panasonic DV tapes
if they're available.
To insert a tape into the video camera, you first need to
make sure you have either the power adapter or a battery
attached to the camera.
Next, pull the "Open/Eject" slider toward you and
open the camera door.
The tape cage will rise and open automatically.
Once the tape cage is open, insert the tape with the reels
of the tape facing toward the inside of the camera.
Once the tape is fully inserted, press the sides
of the tape cage in.
Do not push the tape cage down.
The camera will pull it down automatically.
You can now close the tape door.
This camera has the ability to film in either high definition
or standard definition.
You need to decide which of these formats you would
like to film in before you begin recording.
I'll walk you through the steps for selecting a format.
Begin by powering the camera on.
To do so, move the camera's toggle switch by first pressing
down on the green button on the top of the switch,
then sliding it to the "Camera" mode.
Next, press the "Function" button on the
back of the camera.
Use your Navigation button to select a menu on your camera.
Once you have the menu selected, press in your navigation button
to activate the menu.
Use the navigation button to scroll down to the
"Record/In Setup" menu.
Press the navigation button in to activate that menu.
Press the navigation button once more to activate the
"HD Standard" menu.
You now have five options to choose from.
If you are wanting to film in high definition,
we recommend you select "HDV".
This will shoot widescreen high definition footage.
If you are wanting to film in standard definition,
we recommend you film in "DV (Wide)", which will shoot
wide screen standard definition footage.
If you want to shoot in standard definition full screen,
then select "DV (Normal)".
Once you have selected your preferred format, you are
ready to begin filming.
To do so, simply press the red button on the
back of the camera.
When you want to stop recording, press the red button once more.
If you want to play back the footage you have filmed,
move the camera's toggle switch to the "Play" mode.
You can now rewind your tape and play back your footage.
If you do rewind your tape, however, make sure it is at the
end of your previously recorded footage before you begin
recording anything else.
Finally, let's go over how to attach the camera to a tripod.
To begin with, turn the tripod's locking mechanism
to release the tripod's mounting plate.
On the bottom of the camera, you will see two attachment
sockets--the tripod socket and the guide socket.
Line the quick release plate up with these two sockets,
then screw the quick release plate securely into place.
Now slide the camera onto the tripod from left to right,
pressing down on the tripod's locking mechanism
once it is in place.
