SUSAN: Student Scholars Day began at Grand Valley in 1996 it was originally started in the
division of math and science and the original idea was to provide an
opportunity for students to come together within the math and science
division and the majors that were housed there to talk about their work
SSD has grown extensively and has about 700 presenters per year
we have posters and oral presentations, exhibits, and performances
ROBERT: I've done Student Scholars Day for, I think
three or four years now
at GVSU and the first few times it was a practice at giving talks
so it's kind of my first chance
to give more of a professional type talk
ELLIE: It was really nice for students on Student Scholars Day to be able to come around and look at our poster
and to really ask us questions about our project and it was also nice for the
faculty that were walking around to just be like, hey, what are you doing?
And to be interested in our project and to ask us questions about it and so overall
Student Scholars Day was good for just exposure
SUSAN: For the students who present at Student Scholars Day there's a two-fold benefit
the first benefit is they have an opportunity to share with the campus their
research and their scholarship. In addition to that it does provide an opportunity
for students to experience presenting in a smaller venue before going
to their regional, national,
and international conferences
so it gives them that opportunity to try presenting to see
what they like, what they don't like to receive some good constructive criticism
as well as some support before they go on to those national conferences
ROBERT: This was the first time that I got to actually present something that I was working on
so it was kind of
personally fulfilling but then also
I got a practice run at what you would been doing in more of a professional
setting so when I went to conferences later
working on posters and talks and things like that I already had a flavor for
what I should be doing and where the hangups are
