I enrolled them into the 21st Century program to
build their character and their social skills. What I like is my daughter's enjoying
after-care, which she's not before. She's always been one that wants to learn, she's interested in learning. And that is the
biggest thing is having her want to be here,
want to participate. When they come home, their homework is already done. So it's something that she enjoys and
she's benefiting from as well. It's a way I see as continuing her learning experience, but in a
fun type of atmosphere.
So now we're going to walk into our 21st Century Community Learning Center office.
In this room you'll see a lot of the resources that we use for our Community Learning Center.
Everything from books to reading supplies, even our iPads, which our staff is graciously going through over there.
I think the 21st Century program has done a great job with just reaching out
to the kids in the community. A basically free after-school program for parents that really need afterschool
care, but can't afford it. We are specifically designed for kids-focused and kids-centered learning.
Our kids-centered focus means the kids are engaged
in their learning. The kids really take control of the way they learn.
Can anyone tell me what math lesson they've enjoyed the most?
Regrouping. Regrouping? One thing that I really think is great is the role models of the staff.
The compound word is building. The answers are on the back of the card.
My kids always, always talk about the counselors. And we do a lot of praising with the kids. That's the reward for me.
We do have a curriculum that's designed by teachers that are in the Wake County School system,
so we're not teaching something different from what they're reading for class.
What's your favorite part about the 21st Century program? Homework. You like homework?
We have time for homework help. We do
field trips. I'm able to interface with parents to get to know them, and the
students. They feel welcomed and accepted and like they're part of something special.
Afterschool programs are one of the Y's largest program offerings. In fact, 1 in 5 afterschool programs are supported by 21st Century Community
Learning Center fundings. This funding is very critical to a number of Ys across the country.
This is why Y-USA works hard every year to protect and grow this federal
funding stream. I've seen confidence skyrocket. I mean, I'm a parent and part of me becoming
a volunteer and then moving into a position with the Y was because of what my child was bringing
home. I mean, this is a community that's going to welcome your children and build them up
to be the best students they can be and the best people they can be.
