Welcome to Guitar Practice Perfectly’s look at the intro to Bon Jovi’s classic, “Wanted
Dead Or Alive” – originally played on a 12 string acoustic, though obviously you’ve
just watched me play this on my 6 string acoustic and it still sounds great.
It’s great for cross string picking, you’ve just heard me play through it twice so let’s
look at the detail of how you’re going to play it:
2nd finger sits on the G string at fret 14
1st finger sits on top E at fret 13
We’re going to use a drone note, ti’s the D string – then we’re going to pick
the D string as a down, the G as an up, top E string as a down, then back to the G string
for the last note of our 4 note clusters.
Now, slide your 2nd finger down to fret 12, keep it on, get rid of your 1st finger and
put that on fret 12 of the top E as well ...
For the 2nd part, drive your fingers down 2 frets ...
Same position, on fret 10
Now let’s move back down to fret 9, but this time we’re going to go back to the
first original position, fret 9 and fret 8 on the top E, 2nd and 1st finger ...
2nd finger slides down to fret 5 ...
Always playing the exact 4 strings, but we’ve gone back into the position where both fingers
are at the same fret ...
Fret 4 is the original position, so that’s going to be 4 & 3
And then we’re going to pick that note on the 3rd string ...
Slide down 2 frets so there’s 2 distinctive individual notes ...
And then catch the top E string at fret 1 ...
Ok, so if you’re really watching closely you’ll notice there’s only 2 positions,
and the other thing I’d definitely encourage you to think about is that the 2nd finger
doesn’t leave the G string at all during that classic intro
