I’m leaving home and I’ll be living in student accommodation for the first time,
what adjustments can be made to accommodate students with MS?
Well, first of all I would say that it’s really, really important to find out as much
information as you can about the student halls of residence before you make a decision or
a choice about where you’d like to live and before you make your application.
And usually one of the best ways to do that is to attend an open day, applicant visit
day, offer holders’ day - universities call them by different names.
But go along before your course starts, go to one of these days, and here at Glasgow
certainly, and I’m sure it’s true of other universities, they run tours round the student
accommodation, so go and have a look at the student accommodation and see what it’s
like and then you can make an informed decision about the accommodation that would be best
for you and that would suit your needs best.
Some university websites for residential services or accommodation might have a virtual tour
of the accommodation that you can have a look at on their website.
But the important thing to consider is, if you have a fatigue issue, do not apply to
a big, big noisy hall where there’s partying going on till 3am in the morning, because
you won’t get much sleep.
And obviously when students leave home for the first time they’re very excited and
they’ve come from different parts of Scotland or all over the UK, and indeed, you’ve got
international students as well, so it’s a very lively time socially for many students.
So if you feel that fatigue is going to be an issue for you, then here at Glasgow we
might, if the student discloses they have MS and they have fatigue issues and they need
a quiet hall to live in, then instead of being put in with first year students they might
be put in with postgraduate students or honours students who perhaps may be a little bit older
and who perhaps are not quite so excited about leaving home and have a bit of a more serious
work ethic.
