My son was born with a hearing loss
and after we found out, we wanted to get him hearing aids right away.
He got hearing aids within four months,
and he got his implant when he was five years old.
Before the implant, in terms of communication, Sahib would be a struggle.
We would look at each other,
and he would have to see what I was saying
because he really couldn’t hear.
Then when he had hit a couple years of age,
we had realized that - OK look -
he really virtually has no hearing.
What do we do at this point?
So when we had decided that we were going to get Sahib cochlear implants,
from my research, I found that MED-EL is the most advanced in that
it has the best balance of hardware and software
and that helped me to make my decision.
I like insects very much
because the sizes, the places and the shapes.
When I grow up, I want to be an entomologist.
Sahib's quality of life is much better with the MED-EL.
The thing that really makes me proud is
that he has come so far with all the struggles he had with the hearing.
We can talk, he can do anything that a normal child can do with a hearing.
I like MED-EL, because personally my choice was
I wanted the device to be comfortable for my child
and something that looked good.
I just feel like he is stimulated,
he really enjoys everything that's out there
and he sets his mind to something and he will complete the task,
he is very creative.
In terms of education,
Sahib, he no longer fights to hear
but he fights to learn…
and that is where the fight should be for all kids.
Without the implant, he just was not hearing
and he was going to be left behind.
And now he is in the fast track for his age
and if he did not have a cochlear implant
none of this could have happened.
