Facebook complaints fizzle out: A Viennese Student has filed 22 complaints
but the Irish authority takes it's time...
Months ago the Viennese student Max Schrems has filed complaints
against the social network Facebook,
because of breaches of the data protection laws.
But the procedure does not really move forward.
The initiative "Europe versus Facebook" especially criticizes the
responsible authority in Ireland, where Facebook has its headquarters.
The authority is unable to cope with the situation and
the responsible officers are now not even willing to talk.
He has started a fight with a far more powerful enemy
22 complaints were filed
by "Europe versus Facebook" and Schrems against the giant company.
The whole world was reporting about the brave Viennese,
but now the responsible authority in Ireland, where Facebook has its
European headquarter, does not want to hear from him anymore.
>> I think that the Irish authority has a hard time to cope with the proceeding,
they have about 20 officers, but as far as we know no one with a legal training.
This means that there are also overwhelmed with the laws.
In addition there is surely pressure to not do too much against Irish companies,
since Ireland is currently broke, they are counting on ever job
and of course they are not interested in having any company leave Ireland.
>> Especially bizarre: A high ranking Irish official is practically
'breaking up' with Max Schrems, via a text message and
is refusing any further contact:
>> Max, I know you have contacted the Office. Neither the Commissioner, nor myself are
available to speak to you.
>> But the students are not giving up, if necessary "Europe versus Facebook"
will fight with the authority. Already next week they are planning to
fly to Ireland to advocate for the rights of millions of Facebook users.
