When you hear the names Piaget, Vygotzky, Dewey and Erikson, what comes to mind? Maybe
you think about your child development classes. I once did a puppet show demonstrating Erikson's
eight-stages of human development. Remember those mind shifting books you read by Lisa
Delbert, Betty Jones, Renetta Cooper or Gloria Ladson-Billings. Your CompSAT activities explore
the following framing questions in the area of child development and learning. Who is
this child, and how do I connect with her? What does this child need from me to support
her development and learning? What is development and learning about for this child? What does
knowing this child mean? This competency addresses the foundation for intentional practice in
early childhood education. Developmental theory and research helps us understand how to best
work with children. We've learned that children develop at various rates though in a predictable
sequence. We also know that children need physical and emotional security so they can
learn and grow through their play. Have you ever seen a baby take her first steps? What
a delight. What if we were as curious and delighted about all children's learning and
development? Having this disposition provides a point of view to take with you as you explore
this competency. Consider these dispositions or habits of mind as essential for your practice.
Delight and curiosity in what children have to teach us. Passion for unfolding development
