bjbj Narrator: Richard Marquis was a studio glass pioneer and what that means is that
he was among the first generation of artists to used blown glass artistically in a studio.
Tina Oldknow: In the 1960s, he began glass blowing and because he was dissatisfied with
the techniques he was being taught in the United States Marquis decided to travel to
Italy where he worked with the famous glass masters of Murano at the Veneni Glass Works.
And this was really an unusual situation because the glass masters are not willing to give
up their secrets Narrator: Marquis learned all kinds of new Italian techniques from them,
which he brought back to the United States and taught to other artists. Tina Oldknow:
This piece is made out of murrhine glass, which we call mosaic glass. If you look very
closely in the top you will see one pink murrhine with a tiny teapot in it. This is what we
call a signature cane and that is what Marquis uses to sign his pieces. Narrator: Take a
look on the upper part of this vessel s pedestal and see if you can find another cane that
spells out the artist s name in black block letters? urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags
