The aircraft carrier Intrepid is permanently moored near the Circle Line pier.
A visit to the Intrepid is included in the CityPass, so we went there as well.
"Intrepid" means "courageous", "daring" and "brave".
It is an aircraft carrier built towards the end of Second World war.
Its water displacement is 40000 tons, it could carry 100 planes and 3500 crew.
The fighters and anti-aircraft guns of the Intrepid have destroyed 600 enemy planes,
damaged or sunk 250 enemy vessels. But the aircraft carrier took damage as well.
This photo depicts the damage caused by attack from two kamikaze aircraft in 1944.
6 officers and 59 sailors were killed in the attack.
The Intrepid opened as an air and space museum in August of 1982.
Besides the aircraft carrier, the museum includes a submarine - the Growler
and a Concorde supersonic passenger jet.
USS stands for "United States Ship", and CVS is the classification - antisubmarine aircraft carrier.
First, we enter the hangar deck, which serves now as an exhibition hall.
This memorial resides in the Arlington cemetery in Washington.
The memorial was designed from a photo made by a war correspondent Rosenthal
