It's amazing! There are so many societies for whatever you are interested in, and whatever
you want to do, and whatever level you want to do that. You can do as much or as little
as you want and that's the good thing about it because there is so much that you can be
doing. Name something, name a sport, name an activity, you do it here. There's always
someone who wants to do something if you want to go out, there is always someone who wants
to stay in if you want to stay in, it's just a really nice mix.
I mean I could leave my house at 2 in the morning, go out and find a bunch of friends. There's never not something
there's a society for film writers. There's six plays in a week here, or something crazy
like that. The guy next right to me is president of the Asian music society and teaches dance
lessons and the guy opposite me is in a band. He's also a garage DJ. I sing and I act . It's
like there's just all this other stuff to do, like it's unreal how much a person can
get done here.
And the night life is generally quite good here at the university cities. If you put
20,000 18 to 21 year olds in a town, it's going to be great. It's cool 'cause at first
just being given complete free rein to do what you want and that's pretty fun but then
after a while you start actually getting into societies and the actual student life, not
just drinking.
You can just kind of join a cheese tasting society, you can play for the first football
team. There's such a huge array of things you can do. There's always something for somebody.
There is the Assassins Club where you are given a name and college of somebody you don't
know, and you have to find an original way of killing them.
You can start a society for absolutely anything. My friend came back from a night out to find
a rubber snake in his bed and that was his death, that's how he died in the Assassins
Club. You have the ability to engage in sport at whatever level you want. So, if you want
to take something really seriously, you can play in your college first team or you can
even play for the university. Then again, if you are not so sporty and you just want
to have some fun, meet some new people, have some exercise, there's normally other teams
that cater for your ability.
And it's so easy. We are really lucky because things are subsidized, things which would
be impossible for students to do else where in sports, artistic stuff, and music, to things
you have never even thought of. And it's just great to be able to find out new things about
yourself, joining lots of new societies, playing new sports, and really being able to delve
into the issues that you find interesting about what you are studying.
If you want to do things you usually can, so just get out there, see what you want to
do really.
