>>Hi, I'm Luis Alicea
from the Social Security administration.
>> And I'm Zomarie Santiago also from the
Social Security administration. >> Like many of you, I grew up
in a Spanish speaking household and although I speak English,
I often think in Spanish. And I'm happy to let you know
the Social Security is making strides to communicate
with the Spanish speaking public.
Did you know that the Social Security
has a Spanish version on their website?
You can change the website from English
to the Spanish site by selecting the Spanish link
located in the top of our homepage.
It's very simple. Or just type socialsecurity.gov
in your browser. I'm here to let you know
that not only can you take care of your
Social Security issues online, but you can also
do it in Spanish. >> Please know whether
you're sending information in English or Spanish
you're privacy is very important to the Social Security.
We've taken all the necessary precautions
to ensure your information is protected.
Next I will talk about things that I'm sure
you will find very useful.
Do you want to know how much you can expect
from the Social Security when you retire?
Now you can use the online retirement estimator
to calculate your benefits. Are you ready to retire?
You can apply online for retirement benefits.
Sill working, but you need to apply for Medicare?
You can request this benefit online.
Need to apply for extra help with Medicare prescription
drug costs? You can also do this online
and in Spanish. You can find links in Spanish
to all the applications we just talked about at
socialsecurity.gov. >> Let's take a close view
at the retirement estimator and the online applications
for retirement and Medicare you can find at
socialsecurity.gov in Spanish. Some of you have used
or at least have heard about retirement estimator
in Spanish. The retirement estimator is
a good way to get an idea of how much money you can get
from the Social Security when you retire.
The retirement estimator gives estimates based
on your actual Social Security earnings record.
You can use the retirement estimator
if you have enough Social Security credits
at this time to qualify for benefits.
The retirement estimator will generate an immediate
and personalized estimate of your retirement benefit
and also allows you to view different scenarios.
>> Not everyone can use the retirement estimator.
Generally you can't use it if you're currently
receiving benefits on your own Social Security record,
if you're older than 62 years old
and receiving benefits on another Social Security record.
Or if you're waiting for a decision about the approval
of your application for benefits or Medicare.
And finally if you're eligible for a pension
based on work not covered by Social Security
such as employment with any federal, state
or municipaly government. >> To start,
you will be prompted to enter information
to identify yourself such as your name,
Social Security number, date of birth,
and lasts years earnings. If you worked last year
we assume you will continue to work
this year and will be making
more or less the same amount you entered
for last year's earnings. This will give you a good idea
of what you can expect for your retirement.
You will also be able to compare different retirement dates
or make changes to future earnings
to see how these changes affect your benefits.
>> Luis, one thing that I love
about the retirement estimator is that you enter
the information and you get
an answer immediately. Let's listen
to what some Social Security employees have to say
about the retirement stimator in Spanish.
>> Janny, I think that people who use
the retirement estimator will find it easy to use.
>> Yes you're right, if a person wants to get
a quick estimate of their retirement benefit,
all they have to do is enter their social security number
and some basic information. >> Right, once the person
enters the information they will immediately
get an estimate of their Social Security
benefits for retirement. >> Look, they can see how much
they receive at 62 years of age, at full retirement age,
and up to 70 years of age. >> This is great,
being able to plan for retirement
by trying different ages and different amounts of income
to decide when to apply for Social Security payments.
>> Right, look... the person using
the retirement estimator can see how much he or she
will get at 63 years of age, 64, 65 and so on.
>> So, when you're ready to apply
for retirement benefits, you don't have to visit
a Social Security office. You can do it quickly
and easily from your home or office computer.
Or if you're 65 years of age but if you're not ready
to retire, apply online
for Medicare only. >> If you don't know
how to use the computer, ask your children
or grandchildren to help. >> I have always helped
my grandma fill in forms and look for information
in English. I have helped explain
questions she has to answer and I've checked whether
what she is writing on the form is correct.
But now having the new website in Spanish,
not only will benefit my grandma but also many people I know
in the Hispanic community. Visit us at socialsecurity.gov
to see what I mean. >> We've heard why people
like to take care of many of their Social Security's
issues online and in their own language.
But when it comes to something as important as applying
for retirement and Medicare, I bet you wonder how it works?
When you get to the application form,
you will have to answer questions about yourself
and if you have a family, we will ask questions
about your family and also about your work.
And don't worry, if you have any questions
while completing the application,
you can watch one of our informational videos
showing how to use our application form.
And you don't have to complete it in one session.
If you need a break, you can stop and return
to the application later, without losing information
already entered. Once you've answered
all the questions, select sign now;
your application will be sent electronically
to Social Security. If we need more information
from you we will contact you by phone.
>> When I was part of the team that designed
the online application form for Social Security benefits,
I never imagined I would have the opportunity
to translate into Spanish. I was very excited
about this project. One of the things
that attracted me, was knowing I would make
online Social Security services accessible
to Spanish speaking people. The easiest way to apply
is online and it can be done in Spanish.
>> Social Security wants to reach people
who need extra help with Medicare prescription
drug plan costs. In order to qualify
for extra help, a person must be
receiving Medicare, have limited resources
and income, and reside
in one of the 50 states or the District of Columbia.
If you know someone who has difficulty
paying for Medicare prescription drugs,
a family member, a friend or neighbor,
please tell them to go online and apply for extra help
with Medicare prescription drug plan costs.
All they have to do is visit our website
at socialsecurity.gov. There you will find
all this information in Spanish and see if they qualify
for extra help with Medicare prescription
drug plan costs. And if they don't know
how to use the computer, a loved one may help.
>> We've talked about online services,
but while it's easy and convenient
to browse the Internet you also have other options.
You can call 1800-772-1213 for help in Spanish
or you can visit a Social Security office.
>> But before we finish, let's summarize
what we've talked about? >> Well, we explained
how to obtain your own Social Security
information in Spanish on our website
socialsecurity.gov, and we explained how to obtain
an estimate of your retirement benefits
with the retirement estimator in Spanish.
>> We also gave you a brief description
of the following services available at socialsecurity.gov.
Spanish application for retirement benefits
and Medicare and Spanish application for extra help
with Medicare prescription drug plan costs.
