Hello, my name is Lilian Waters, and welcome to Culture Throughout the Ages.
Today we will be discussing the 1920s
and the cultural aspects of that.
When Prohibition was passed, gangsters, flappers, and speakeasies
all really rose to social prominence in the 1920s.
and um,
this is certainly a result - I think - that we can attribute it to Prohibition.
Camille, darling, how are you?
Hi Jane, how are you?
I'm well.
How's Johnny?
He's doing well. We just got engaged.
Oh that's wonderful! I heard he and William were talking last weekend
about this 18th amendment.
Oh they agree with us of course. It's just silliness.
I know, what can we do without alcohol?
I know...
Oh I'm quite parched,
would you like me to get you something to drink?
A Mint Julep would be just lovely.
Ah, I'll get a Mojito for myself.
I'll be right back.
Excuse me.
Oh, hello. Can I get you anything?
Hi, can I get a Mint Julep and a Mojito?
Certainly.
There you go!
Thank you.
No problem.
Do you happen to have a ciggy on you?
No, I'm trying to quit actually,
but you could probably ask that guy over there.
Oh I don't know about that,
I heard he's in aviation - a real fly boy.
And i'm Lucky Lindy!
What do you mean by that?!
It's obvious that he's a gangster!
I doubt it. Let's go and see.
You can go see by yourself.
Hey there, doll.
Do you happen to have a ciggy on you?
Not in this jacket Doll Face.
How about a drink, then?
Also, during this time, the younger, teenage generation
uh, began exploring *** boundaries
much to the dismay, of course, of the older generation.
Never understood why you read that -
- can't be anything in there that wasn't on the radio broadcast.
Look here, page 4.
Heist at the bank.
Did you hear that in the radio broadcast?
Oh baby, you did it!
I'm going to buy you a car, Doll Face.
And also, because housewives
uh, were more social
during this period,
and ironically, you hear stories about women who
acted as normal housewives,
would go to tea... meet each other for housewifery events,
and ultimately they would be the wives of gangsters,
or gangsters themselves.
This was all very unique because you see
the clash between women
in the 1920s and flappers
and women who did believe in Prohibition.
Because women were really the ones who
instigated the Prohibition act.
Susana! It's so good to see you!
You too.
You know, it's been a long few days but
it's always nice to see you...
Oh my gosh I know.
At least my husband is buying me a new car.
That's nice.
Business must be going well.
Yes. His accounting firm gave him a raise.
I thought you said he was a stock broker.
...oh... um, well...
they transferred him the the accounting department.
Well!
How's your husband hunt going?
How's the uh, husband hunting going?!
Well you know some men are uh,
threatened by my
AUTHORITY.
My name is Lilian Waters,
this has been Culture Throughout the Ages,
and I thank you for watching. Goodnight.
