Question Time #1 - Why we left korea - Raising a mixed race child in korea - Part 1

Jae, what are you eating? What are you doing? What are you eating? KFC KFC? Jae what food do Korean people like the most? Other than kimchi? This! (fried chicken) *That's not true....he's just joking around haha Second? Watermelon :Laughing: Don't joke around! You really love chicken, don't you? I'm really full right now. I'm so full! I ate a lot of chicken! That person, in our comments, asked us why we came back to America. Oppa, You wanted to come to America more than me, at first, right? Don't you remember? When you first said you wanted to come, I didn't really want to... But you really... No, you wanted to come (to America) too.... No, I didn't really wanna come I don't really wanna come (be in the US) now either~ Now?! What can we do about it now? We're already here! It's a joke! Oppa, at first, why did you want to come to the USA? At first, my reason from wanting to come (to the US) was ... because of our baby. If we have a baby... Why don't have any kids yet. We don't have any But if we did... Okay, if we did... If we had a baby If we were in Korea it seems like our baby would have a hard time. If I'm honest...because of the color of our baby's skin But you think that in America, our child wouldn't have problems becuase of the color of his/her skin? The things that would be difficult in Korea and the things that would be difficult in America just seem different. If we had a baby in Korea, the kid would just feel like he/she was alone. But he/she wouldn't be alone. There are lots of mixed babies in Korea. But there aren't really that many...when compared with America. My hair was all crazy! That's true, but in America..black people Oppa, the camera is there. I keep foregetting. Because of the color of our kid's skin.... ::me struggling to remember the word for racism:: Racism Racism Because of racism you wanted to come to the US But, as soon as we came to the States... if you look at the news...black men keep dying Continuously.. because of the police They die :( When you see that... BUT~ Don't you think like..why did I even come here? But America...more than Korea There are a lot of people. I know that a lot of black people are being killed and that there's racism but... More than in Korea... there are Asian people, white people, black people, Hispanics...all together so More than in Korea.. Different people...... usually Korean people have skin like me But what color are black people? Black (brown), right? So Korean people think like this.. Well...I don't know...I mean, yea, these days things have gotten a lot better but.. When Korean people see Black people or people with darker skin They start, from the beginning, staring like this... But in America, people don't go around staring like that Right when I was in Korea Whenever I took the bus or the subway The old people always stared at me like this... Continously (seriously..even if I stared back at them....they just didn't stop haha) When they did that, how did you feel? If I'm honest, I was just like "Oh, those people are curious" because they hadn't seen a lot of black people. Or like, "Oh because I'm pretty today." I thought about it like that....but yea there were some days when I didn't like it. I'm just a person. So why are you looking (at me)like that. A little....well I think....my opinion... If you come to America...there is racism and stuff like that but But unlike Korea... I think it'd be easier for the kids to adapt. That's what I think... I think it'd be difficult to adapt (fit in??)in Korea. I'm gonna speak English for a sec. I think that The stuff in Korea and the stuff in America (the problems) isn't really that different. When our kid is in America, there's gonna be the problem of like.."Am I Korean?Am I black(American)? What I am?" Do I need to be (behave) like a Korean or like a black person (American)? What do I need to do? That feel is gonna be there, ya know. Jae: I think that/ Jenny: That feeling is gonna be there in Korea and America... If I'm honest... If you and I have a baby... My honest feeling is that....I wish our kid could have an "American" mind...(think like an American???..) It'd be better is he/she didn't go to Korea. He she didn't go to Korea!!!? I know I'm a Korean person..... I don't hate/dislike Korea.... I just really hate it when people stare at me... I don't know..maybe that happens in America...but not like in Korea. If they do...they just think that "Oh that's a black person, white person, Asian person, Hispanic person...." like that But not like in Korea when they look at you like this.. Old people in Korea might even touch you. You know it's true! What? (Sorry that's so loud haha). In America do think that people ...like white people don't be all like "Can I touch your hair?" etcc.... But people don't stare at you with fascination (like you're something 'weird')...the feeling is different That's true, but like when I first came to Korea and people did that I really hated it "Why are you looking at me like that?!" At first! But little by little...when people would do that...I just didn't see it. People were doing that and I didn't even know/realize. You'd say to me like "Why are those people looking at us?" I'd be like "They were looking at us?" I really didn't know. I really really hate that (when people stare) But that's because you've spent your whole life living amongst Koreans (as a Korean) There weren't many...well I guess maybe now there are lots of foreigners, but from the time you were young there weren't... Yea but there's something I want to tell you/ add to that... You were born in America, right? You have an American mind.. But if by chance our baby was born in Korea He/she is gonna have a Korean mind He's gonna think like a Korean He/she is gonna think the same as all of his/her friends But then those people all look at him/her strangely How do you think he/she is gonna feel? It'll be so hard for him/her... Yea, you're right. That could be really hard... But our baby isn't just gonna have a Korean mindset America has a much longer history of being multi-cultural There are lots of other people from all over the world That kind of like....only looking at someone's outward appearance...(not looking at the whole person) They do it like that... Right? True. I really hate that... Especially if we have a baby But I sort of feel like... Our kid... from the time he/she is born will have been exposed to those kinds of situations... If we, as the parents, teach our child well, our kid might not hate it as much as you do... They might just be like "Oh people are just like that" You know I'm a black person in America There's a lot of difficult, *** stuff But my parents brought me up well so when those situations arise I can just be like "Yea *** is like that" It's annoying but "I should think like this...or react like this".. They taught me (how to deal with those situations), So I can live "comfortably" in America (hahaha well..I mean....I guess) I have no idea what I'm trying to say here hahahaha Look at Jae trying not to get annoyed hahahahahahahaha But I don't think that our kid is gonna have like 100% a Korean mindset He/she can't Even if he/she is living in Korea Jae: Why?/ Jenny:Because his/her mother is American But he's got his friends and all the stuff he/she's doing...How is he/she gonna think like you? I don't think like my mom and dad It's mixed! What I'm trying...and FAILING (hahahah) to say here is that I'm not gonna act like a Korean mom at home..so my kids aren't gonna think exactly like a typical Korean kid. I'm not that kind of person So I'm not gonna do that stuff So our kid isnt gonna be just like the other kids I taught some mixed kids at my school, ya know. They were Korean when they were playing with their friends But they were also kind of "Western" But was that baby mixed with white or black? White See?! Being mixed with black and being mixed with white...even though they are both biracial(mixed-race)... If I'm honest... I can be honest... Right? Okay, speak truthfully Being mixed with white..and being mixed with black...in Korea...It's people just think about it differently So the reason that I wanted to come to America and have our baby here...well that's the main reason People.....well let's just imagine that we're in Korea and we've had our baby there... The way people look at him/her, the things that they are thinking, and the way they act towards him/her....is just different Think about a kid being like. Hey that kid is mixed-raced. I'm mixed race... But that person is mixed with white I'm mixed with black But the way that people talk to us is different How would you feel? I think we've gotta stop here and make a part 2. If I keep talking with my wife I think we're gonna fight. Put that down...the light is too strong I meant to say maybe I'm being naive.....but I forgot how to speak English ㅋㅋㅋ We're finished right?
