[INTERVIEWER] : Do you have any ideas for improving Penrith?
Well, I think there’s lots of ideas for improving Penrith but the ideas need to have the backing of the majority of people
I think it would be nice to have the main street pedestrianised for one big thing.
We should probably make more of Penrith Castle which is one of our historic monuments
which could be lit up at night in the summer and maybe used for arts performances.
[INTERVIEWER] : OK. Will you be able to help implement your idea and if so how?
I’m the editor of the local newspaper to begin with so ideas could be floated in there
and I’m also the Community Engagement Champion for the Vitality of Penrith Group
which means getting ideas from this evening and moving those forward.
[INTERVIEWER] : Do you have any ideas on improving Penrith?
Well...
I think that the parking isn’t brilliant. I think that’s a bit of a problem.
I think if you made it nice for people to park and know they wouldn’t be fined and things that would help.
People would stay a little longer, maybe go to a few extra shops without rushing back to their car. That would be lovely.
I also think, the main street where B and M and all those shops are ...
if that was maybe not full of cars and traffic. If it was more pedestrianised with nice seating, some nice flowers and things
That would be lovely. That would help with tourists as well. People might come and sit and have a bit longer in town and spend a bit of money, have an ice-cream.
[INTERVIEWER] : Would you be able to help implement your idea and if so how?
Well I don't really know if I could do much about all of that. Not really. I don’t know that I could do a lot to help with that. But I’d certainly quite like to see it.
[INTERVIEWER] : Thank you
You're welcome.
[INTERVIEWER] : Do you have any ideas for improving Penrith
Yes.
[INTERVIEWER]: What would you do?
What would I do? I would look to increase the amount of community events so that the people of Penrith got to know each other more.
[INTERVIEWER] : Will you be able to help implement your idea and if so how?
I work full time for a church at the minute, not this one, but a different one
and part of my role is to work within the community and look at things we can do to facilitate the community within Penrith.
[INTERVIEWER] : Do you have any ideas for improving Penrith?
Not especially.
I think, actually, instead of bringing in all these big new shops, if they concentrated on the shops we’ve got because that’s why people come to Penrith
because we have a lot of specialist little shops and if we concentrated on those I think we would draw people in
instead of having big shopping arcades that we don’t need.
[INTERVIEWER] : Will you be able to help implement your idea and if so how?
I’m not sure that I could help really.
[INTERVIEWER]: OK
Alright? Thank you.
[INTERVIEWER] : Do you have any ideas for improving Penrith?
Yes.
[INTERVIEWER]: What are they?
What are they? I think there should be more arts in Penrith
more participatory arts for people of all ages but particularly for older people.
[INTERVIEWER] : Will you be able to help implement your idea and if so how?
I'm trying to implement my ideas at the moment and I just need to get in contact with other people who think the same.
[INTERVIEWER] : Any ideas on improving Penrith?
I just need to think about that one.
I think it’s a lovely market town and I think it just needs maybe a bit more regeneration and development in order to attract, maybe, people here for a little bit longer.
I don’t know how that could be done but I think if it was maybe marketed a bit more.
You've got a lovely town. I like very much the idea of the Christmas fair - in December
I think that's a great an opportunity to attract more people into the town
but I think it needs a bit more regeneration in terms of a visitor attraction would be good
in addition to what it currently has because at the moment it’s selling itself very much as a very nice market town
I think if it had a Michelin star restaurant there, or a visitor attraction in addition to something else it might get more people here
But Penrith is very very nice. It's lovely town.
[INTERVIEWER] : Will you be able to help implement your idea?
I’m currently working for a project at the Council and we are making recommendations to the Council
so, we are putting forward recommendations at the moment.
[INTERVIEWER] : Do you have any ideas on improving Penrith?
I think Penrith should be kept a lot cleaner, with road sweeping and tidying the main street up. And getting people into Penrith.
[INTERVIEWER] : Would you be able to help implement your idea and if so how?
I think it’s up to the Council - I work a lot so I’m always tied up doing things.
[INTERVIEWER] : Do you have any ideas for improving Penrith?
[INTERVIEWER] : Do you have any ideas for improving Penrith?
Any ideas to improve Penrith? Well, I’m quite new to the area you see, and I moved from the north east about 6 months ago.
I think to improve Penrith there could be a better range of shops. That's what I would say.
[INTERVIEWER] : Will you be able to help implement your idea and if so how?
I’m not sure. I work for a big charity and .... possibly.
[INTERVIEWER] : Do you have any ideas for improving Penrith?
I do. There’s a number of things that could be
we could clean the place up in terms of keeping the streets tidy and perhaps spruce up the shop fronts and things like that.
[INTERVIEWER] : Will you be able to help implement your idea and if so how?
Oh, I don’t know. Very good question.
I think everyone can help in terms of keeping the place tidy.
[INTERVIEWER]: OK. Thank you for your help.
[INTERVIEWER] : Do you have any ideas for improving Penrith?
Yes I do.
[INTERVIEWER]: Would you pass them on?
OK, right. You know the big industrial estate. You know all the lorries come off the industrial estate and they all go in from Junction 40.
and that big roundabout is really really busy and it's difficult to get on. It's very busy.
It would be a good idea to have, at junction 41 - you know that real quiet junction?
Have access to Gilwilly industrial estate from that side.
So all the lorries can come off there leaving junction 40 mainly for just cars.
And I think that would improve Penrith, wouldn't you?
[both INTERVIEWERS]: Yeah.
[INTERVIEWER] : Will you be able to help implement your idea and if so how?
I arrange finance for companies, so anybody who wants to build a motorway I can help or the access from the motorway to Gilwilly, I can help in terms of finance.
[INTERVIEWER] : Do you have any ideas for improving Penrith?
I’ve got one or two ideas which I’ve put up on the board.
I’d like to think that something could be done with the youth that are on the streets at the moment.
[INTERVIEWER] : Would you be able to help implement your idea and if so how?
Yes I think I could because I could volunteer couldn’t I. If we found a place for the youth to go that’s safe, I could volunteer.
Oooh, you're getting very close.
[INTERVIEWER] : Can you tell us about about the Coronation Gardens.
Yes. Our idea is to put a lot of the history of Penrith all into the garden in one place
and also to make a sensory garden so that people can go there and sit and enjoy the trees and the flowers and everything
but also they can go there and find out an awful lot about their heritage and where they come from and everything else about Penrith.
That’s what we hope to achieve. OK?
