The Museum of Contemporary Art was inaugurated on the 28th of July 1979 by the Goulandris
Foundation in Hora, capital of Andros. The founders wished to establish a small contemporary
art museum which would be designed and outfitted according to the latest museum standards,
with a view to house international exhibitions.
The museum was intended to exhibit the collection of works by a local sculptor, Michael Tombros,
which he bequeathed to his native island.
Every summer, the
museum organizes temporary exhibitions showing works of contemporary major artists, which
are a major attraction that drow art lovers from near and far.
