>> Michel I love my profession. At some moment people ask me what is it I tlel them I feel
like I'm a physician for the planet. I feel like there is a calling for me to do environment
work. I'm a professor environmental engineering. My area of work and research relates to pollution
in natural systems. When you have large-scale pollution, the challenge is really not to
treat them in the lab; the challenge is how you can mitigate the environment damage. Currently,
we are investigating and we are remediating the Exxon Valdez oil spill Also we're working
in the Gulf of Mexico and that 2010 spill that was about 210 millions gallons of oil.
We are also now working on the issue of natural gas extraction from shale formations. The
work is being done in the State of Pennsylvania. I think engineers should be very visibile
and that's what I have tried to do since I've been at Temple University. I'm the director
for the Center for Natural Resources Development and Protection. As a public university in
Philadelphia, we are well-positioned and based on our mission also, we are well-positioned
to be that entity, the entity that the city of Philadelphia will come to anytime there
are any environmental issue.
