Welcome to Windborne with me, MrWooly.
Yesterday, Windborne was finally released on Steam Early Access.
and we jump straight into the game.
For anyone who doesn't know Windborne yet:
It's a sandbox game similar to Minecraft.
But this world is a huge floating island and there's much more magic around.
Let's start by creating an island.
I'll call it "Lummerland".
Then we enter a seed that's used for world generation.
I'm going to use "Let's Play Windborne".
The size of the island is set to "small" by default.
Now let's create our island.
It takes a little while.
In the background, you can see the island being created.
And we start the game.
There's a small tutorial to help you get used to the controls.
It's pretty straightforward.
You can look around using the mouse.
Move your character by using WASD.
And right-clicking takes you to gathering mode.
The left and right mouse button functionality is swapped compared to Minecraft.
Right-clicking destroys blocks, while left-clicking places them.
We're supposed to gather ten blocks right now, so let's do it.
Awesome, we're done.
Now let's switch to placing mode, since we're supposed to place those ten blocks again.
Let's just put them back where we picked them up.
Very nice.
Now let's have a look into our inventory.
Open it by pressing "Q".
As we can see, it's pretty large, with some extra slots in the hotbar,
so we'll be able to store lots of items in it.
Last but not least we have to activate the Dragonstone.
The Dragonstone is the main hub on our island.
It gives us quests throughout the game as well as rewards for completed quests.
Also, whenever we fall off the edge of the world,
we are teleported back to the Dragonstone.
Other than that, there's no punishment for doing so.
We can teleport to the Dragonstone at any time.
But now, let's interact with it by pressing "E".
And we get our first quest right away.
We're supposed to walk 30 meters from the Dragonstone, and then return
to get *this* reward.
I'll explain what it is in just a moment.
So let's do it.
Go for a little walk, have a look at the beautiful landscape...
The biome we're currently in is called the "Grasslands".
It consists of lots of grass, some trees and marble rocks.
There are other biomes, for example the Forest...
...and the Desert.
Those are the only ones currently in the game.
Surely, more will be added later.
We've already completed the task.
So let's head back.
Let me turn down the music just a little bit.
As beautiful as it may be.
We talk to the Dragonstone again and get our first reward, a scroll.
The next task is to collect 50 granite blocks.
We accept it, of course.
But first, let me explain to you the importance of the scrolls.
So there's a crafting menu in this game.
You can craft items just like in Minecraft.
But right now, we can only craft very few, 16 to be precise.
The scrolls that we're getting help us by teaching us new crafting recipes.
There are different item sets
The Stone set, the Highborne set, the Runestone set, and the Desert set.
Right now we can only craft items from the Stone set.
Using the scroll, we can learn an item from the Highborn set.
So that's what we'll do right now.
We just learned to craft a fence, a Highborn Fence.
The resulting item of a scroll is random.
In this case, it happened to be a fence.
We get scrolls as a reward for pretty much every quest.
Now we're asked to collect 50 granite blocks.
It takes a little while...
Different types of blocks take different time to gather.
Grass blocks are gathered pretty quickly.
Stone takes a little longer.
In the bottom right corner, you can see what type of block I'm currently looking at.
Hopefully it's granite most of the time, since that's what we need right now.
But it may happen that blocks blend into one another,
for example this one here looks like granite covered with grass, but the indicator says "Grass".
So when I gather it, I get a grass block.
You have to be careful, it can be a little irritating at first.
But you get used to it fairly quickly.
The smaller the blocks, the faster you can remove them.
This little nook right here can be gathered very quickly,
but it still gives me a whole block.
We need six more.
I'll quickly gather them.
And then we're off to the Dragonstone.
That's it.
We can either walk back to the Dragonstone,
or we can teleport back using "CTRL+R", as I mentioned earlier.
Give me my reward!
Alright.
For our next task, we need to flatten a small area and then build a granite platform on top of it,
on which we'll build our first house.
Let's get started.
We already have the necessary blocks.
Let's clear up the area over here.
The quest status tracker is on the right side of the screen.
As we can see, clearing a flat area is incomplete right now.
And we haven't placed 36 granite blocks yet, either.
Okay, that's a bug, we're not quite done yet.
*Now* it should be complete.
Alright.
We picked up some granite blocks just a moment ago, so all we need to do now is place them.
...and the last one. Complete!
Let's turn in that quest as well.
And we get another scroll.
Next, we need to gather ten more granite blocks and craft five Stone steps.
We can do that right now.
Back over here.
Gathering resources may seem tedious at first,
but later on you won't be noticing it as much
since you'll be gathering something all the time and piling up lots of resources.
We've got ten granite blocks, now we can craft some Stone steps.
It's possible to only display items we can currently craft, which happen to be the Stone steps.
We need five, so I'll click the craft button five times.
Okay. Now while theoretically we don't have to place them on the ground, I'm going to do it anyway because I can.
Something worth noting is that we can change the shape of the steps.
Change the appearance.
Steps that go around a corner, for example.
Looking pretty sweet already.
Turn in the quest...
The next quest wants us to gather four more granite blocks and two blocks of glowmoss, as well as crafting and placing a Shaper.
Done with gathering granite.
Glowmoss: If you know Minecraft, it's got Glowstone.
It's pretty much the same here, except that it's glowing moss, not stone.
You can see it everywhere in the rock formations. The glowing dots, that's glowmoss.
And we're supposed to gather some now.
Okay.
Back in our crafting menu, we can see that we can now craft a shaper.
The Shaper is used to refine raw materials.
Essentially, it is used to cut blocks to shape.
You can input stone or wood, and it converts them to bricks, planks and the like.
Let's put our shaper in here.
Now that quest is done as well.
Turn it in.
For the next quest we have to gather six iron ore and another three glowmoss, then craft a Stove and place it.
I saw some iron around here somewhere...
Up there, for example. It's somewhat reddish.
I think there was some over here as well.
There are regular and rich iron veins.
Regular veins yield one ore, rich veins yield two.
And we learned a new block, simply by picking up iron.
We can now craft an iron block, if we want to.
It has no real use, except for looking nice.
But we don't want to do that right now. We want to use the iron and craft something with it.
We have enough iron, now we need some glowmoss.
I'll take a little more than we need, just in case.
And then we craft a stove.
Beautiful.
Quickly back to the house.
And we shall put it over here.
Another quest done.
Now we need to gather ten dirt blocks and turn them into ceramic using the stove.
So let's do it.
Where can we find dirt? Well, let's have a look below the grass.
This is still grass, but as you can see, it's already turning into dirt.
The indicator in the bottom right corner says "Dirt", that's exactly what we need.
All in all we need ten blocks... Fantastic.
Let's put them in the stove.
We also need some fuel for the stove.
For that, we were told to use grass, so we just put it down here.
And now we're all set. One block of dirt turns into one block of ceramic.
The fuel level decreases over time, but you can refuel any time.
Let's just wait until the ten ceramic blocks are done.
For the other part of the quest, we'll have to craft five blades.
Those are used to operate the shaper.
Task completed.
We'll wait until next time to do the next quest.
I'll just quickly learn the scrolls...
We learned how to craft a sign...
...pavement...
...a stand...
...steps...
...a pot...
...and an urn.
Thank you for watching. :-)
If you like the game, I can highly recommend it to you. It's available on Steam Early Access now.
