>> The idea originated from an installation of scarecrows that I saw in Finland in 2000
that made a statement on the exodus of people from resource regions in that country during
that time. The installation was called “The Silent People”
>> We live in Abitibi-Témiscamingue where a certain exodus has occurred. Rapide-Danseur
has a community-based help centre with a surplus of used clothing and we thought that this
would make a good community project ….. >>But really the intention is not to focus
on the problems of the region, but rather to show our vitality.
>> We placed red square patches on the scarecrows so that people would understand that all these
scarecrows were opposed to Bill 78 and, moreover, that they were not going to provide the protest
route to the Quebec Provincial Police. >>It’s just for fun. It’s really mostly
that. People don’t expect it, they arrive and, “Hey, what’s that?!”…. It’s
a local curiosity.
