In this section, we will return to the web console
to look at additional features and configurations.
We'll start by looking at customizing the web user interface.
Next, we'll move on to additional features available within SolarWinds Orion Web Console,
such as virtualization and wireless monitoring.
As with most features, the web console is fully customizable.
From the Settings area, access by clicking "Settings"
in the upper right-hand corner of the web console,
navigate to the Customize area.
Here you can create menu bars, change color schemes,
and even add links to external websites.
Furthermore, customized menu bars can be assigned to specific users,
limiting what they can and cannot see
and focusing them on the areas they are responsible for monitoring.
For instance, if both the Network Performance Monitor
and Server and Application Monitor products are installed,
the admin can remove the applications tab from the Network Engineer's account.
Menu bars are customized by clicking the "Edit" button for the specific item.
From here, it is only a matter of dragging and dropping
components back and forth from available items to selected items.
Once finished, click "Submit" to save your menu bar.
Additionally, you can create new menu bars by clicking the "New Menu Bar" button
at the bottom of the customize menu bar list,
then dragging and dropping available views
into the Selected Items area
in a similar manner to editing menu bars.
Customizing the color scheme is very straightforward.
Orion provides a list of several options available.
Frequently, there is a need to have an external website
linked in a menu bar for easy access.
Adding and editing external websites is also a very straightforward process.
From Customize, click "External Websites"
and then the "Add" button to add a new one.
The Menu Title can be whatever you wish to call this item in the menu bar.
Copy and paste the URL of the external site
in the URL space and then select the menu bar you wish this item to be a part of.
From the Web Console setting, you can also build custom views.
From the Views resource, click "Add New View",
name the view, and then choose the type of view you wish to have.
Each type of view available is described directly below the type of the view drop down,
and then the type then determines what resources are available for that particular view.
Click "Submit" to create the view and move on to customizing it.
In the "Customize View" window,
you can change the column sizes
and add resources to both Columns 1 and 2.
Add a resource by clicking the "+" button.
This will take you to an extensive list of resources available categorized by type.
Once you've selected the resource,
you can delete it or copy it.
You also have the option to reorder resources
and move them back and forth between columns
using the arrows.
Finally, you can use limitations to customize which objects
will appear within the resources.
When finished, click "Done."
Orion NPM offers a couple of additional monitoring features
that come standard with any Orion NPM installation.
The first feature is accessed through the Virtualization tab on the web console.
Orion provides a high-level view into the virtualization environment.
Statistics like up/down status and host resource utilization are displayed here.
When a user selects a VM host,
the Details view will also contain statistics related to VMs
that are running on that host.
NPM offers wireless monitoring accessed through the network tab.
Wireless monitoring provides statistics like up/down status,
Client Mac, IP address, signal strength, and data transfer information
for both autonomous APs, as well as controller-based systems.
NPM also offers monitoring for a couple of proprietary Cisco features.
First, NPM supports monitoring of EnergyWise services.
EnergyWise measures power consumption by devices
and is used to reduce power costs through intelligent schedules on PoE devices.
EnergyWise views can be customized and added to menu bars
from monitoring EnergyWise usage specifically.
