Hi! My name is Brandon Sarkis on behalf of Expert Village. Today I am going to show you
how to make black eyed peas. As you can see, I've got my colander at the sink and I am
just going to take my beans and dump them in the colander just like that and we are
going to wash them off which is as hard as you would think it would be. The reason why
is you get all kind of weird stuff sticking to your beans during shipping or during packaging
that is a different kind of bean ended up in there. Somehow I missed that one; I sifted
through them. Don't use any soap or anything when you wash them. Just go through and rinse
them all off; be thorough about it. You can use cold water too, that's the other thing.
There's another funky one that I missed. We are just going to lay these flat for a second,
let some water run over them and the next step is we are going to soak these beans.
You are supposed to soak them overnight but really give them I don't know; around four
to six hours should be plenty of time. So while this finishes this, I'll grab a bowl
and put my beans in it and let them start soaking while we do everything else. All right
so I will just use my hands, pick the beans back up or if you have a fancy colander that
has a spout on it, you could tip them right into it. I don't trust my ability to not make
a tremendous mess in the process so I am going to do it this way. Besides I could say they
are hand made. There is a little bit of dirt; you can actually smell the dirt coming off
of them if you know what dirt smells like. Just kind of a musty, kind of a weird smell
comes off of them when you are rinsing them off. Come on, every last pea; no peas left
behind. Just going to do that, going to submerge them in water, give them a stir and that's
that. Those are going to sit in the water while we do everything else and they are going
to sit there for overnight which in my case, will actually be about four hours or so. Let's
go start doing the rest of our prep.
