Hello and welcome to "How to install MODX"
In this video I will show you how to install MODX on your server.
You can download the latest version of MODX at modx.com.
Before we do so however, let's check if our server meets the server requirements.
Here we see both the recommended configuration and minimum requirements.
While the minimum requirements might work for you, I suggest you get yourself a hosing provider that meets the recommended configuration.
The vanilla installation of MODX works with the minimum requirements.
There are however lots of addons that don't. So go with the recommended setup.
Alright, I already checked the recommended configuration so we are good to go.
Here we are back at the download page.
As you can see there is a traditional and Advanced download available.
The advanced installation allows to customize quite a few things and we will cover this in a future video.
For now we just want the traditional installation, so we click the first download button.
Right now MODX is being downloaded to our pc.
Alright, the download completed, so let's have a look at what we have.
Before we can upload MODX to our server, we need to uncompress the downloaded file.
I use a program called 7-zip, but you can use whatever your Operating System provides.
Let's extract this folder so we can upload it to our server.
OK, all the files are uncompressed and ready to be uploaded.
To transfer the files to our server we need a FTP program. I use Filezilla, but by you can use whatever works for you.
Let's enter the login credentials our provider gave us and click the QuickConnect button.
On this server, our website is located inside the htdocs folder, so let's open it.
On the left side I browse to the downloaded files.
Just select all of them and drag them to the right to start the upload.
Alright, all the files are now on our server, so let's close FileZilla.
To install MODX we need to go to our domain and add /setup. Let's do that now.
So we are about to install MODX. If you want, you can select another language here, but English is fine, so let's just click 'Select'
A great CMS should at least make you feel welcome, right? Click 'next'
Because this is a new installation, this is the only available option right now.
What you need to set the folder and file permissions at, really depends on your server. When in doubt, leave them at the default values.
The last two values are correct, so let's click 'Next'
Now we need to enter the database information. When you don't have this information, check with your provider.
Alright, let's test if this works.
If you are not sure what character set or collation you need, set them as we have here right now. Ok, let's create our database
So far so good. Now let's create our admin user by entering the username, email and password and continue.
Now we see the Pre-installation check results.
Most likely everything will be just fine, but in case you run into any trouble; check the link below.
Everything is just fine, so let's click Install
Alright! Our installation was successful. Just to be sure; check if you got any warnings, by clicking the toggle link.
No warnings here, so let's move on.
Our friendly CMS even thanks us for installing. Let's make sure to delete the setup folder and click Login
Great, all done. Let's see if our login works.
And sure enough, it does! Mission accomplished! See you in the next video!
