THE MAKING OF
In 'Through The Rainbow' we discover an old, forgotten umbrella
which tells a story of an unlikely friendship
between an art teacher and a free-spirited, wandering man
in the 50's Viet Nam.
I need a close up on her face
with those objects in the foreground
so as she's spinning it
basically we see the different individual objects...
Can you come here and have a look?
We went with the idea that less is more and
we tried to be as creative as we can yet
yet as concise as we can; we knew it's a short story,
we knew that we have very, very little time,
and we approached it with that mindset.
We didn't try to do unrealistic things,
we had realistic expectations,
ambitious expectations, but realistic expectations.
Basically I'm in charge of the style, the hair and make up.
Everything's ok!
It was kind of hard because
maybe the 50's in a foreign country
were not the same as the 50's in Viet Nam,
so we did a lot of research, googling for pictures and I found
this old, amazing blog with only pictures of fashion
back in the 50's, 60's, 70's, in Viet Nam and
and most of the trendy people in Vietnam that maybe
had the money to follow the fashion,
they would have the same styles
so we have this dress that looks very 'post-war' style,
and we have the other dress which is totally 50's,
with all the flowers.
We cannot see you 'superman' underwear.
You dirty boy! You dirty boy... close your eyes.
Making a film in 48 hours is really, really a challenge.
Certain moments, Matt told me: "you have to act naturally"
and I did act naturally
but it turns out it didn't look natural.
Then, I should figure out how the person in the movie
actually feels about it and then act that way.
I was always dreaming about acting, but
I was too shy.
This is a first time so
I'm shaking a lot at first,
but after that, my director is happy so far and
maybe this is my first step to acting.
I'm waiting for everybody to be ready.
The light is very nice now, we should start very soon.
I don't know, I hate interviews!
COLOR CORRECTION SAMPLES (BEFORE/AFTER)
We have basically had to listen to a lot of Vietnamese songs from that era
and had to recreate all of the sounds electronically and
make them sound authentic at the same time.
We tried to get some Vietnamese influence on the music.
We worked pretty much together with Matt,
he'd tell us what he wants and pretty much
we'd try to make some songs.
