This is our mummy named Demetrios. We actually put his face back on his body. The portrait
was actually on display
for a number of periods of years, whereas his body has never been on display. So part
of this project is reuniting his portrait with his figure
and also just consolidating the paint on his wrappings and making him stable for travel
on this exhibition.
Certain parts of his wrappings have giant, sort of, tears and holes in them. So we worked
with a textile conservator named Kathy Francis
to apply this very shear thin fabric, which, in a way, will just contain and stabilize
the areas that are torn in the linen of his wrapping.
He will be shipped on something that's going to be kind of like a giant pillow that will
mean that we don't actually have to handle him all that much when he is travelling,
we will just handle the storage platform and he'll go on display on that and rest on that.
