Welcome to another episode of So You Want to Travel the World, question and answer!
This first question comes from MariahIzOnFiah. She asks, if staying in a place in another
country for several weeks, is it cheaper to stay in an apartment or hostel. It depends
entirely on what country you're travelling in and whether your in a major city or on
the outskirts. When I was travelling in Istanbul, Turkey, I rented an apartment because it was
significantly cheaper than staying in a hotel for a few days. Choosing a hostel or apartment
if they are around the same price, I would personally choose a hostel, but it depends
on how long you are staying. If you are staying no longer than a month, then a hostel is a
great place to meet other travellers and make friends. If you are staying in a city for
more than a month, then renting an apartment is kind of cool because it makes you feel
like you are living there and are part of the community.
LolsaXx asks: Do you use couchsurfing or hitchhike solo? I have done both. I absolutely love
couchusrfing. I think it is a fantastic organization. The people I have met through couchsurfing,
I'm still friends with today; people who have stayed on my couch or people who's couches
I've slept on. It is a great way to learn about a country or city and the culture and
traditions. What better way to do that then to live with a local and learn from them.
It's also free. Who does not love free travel, accommodations or tours?
Lowren Nguyen asks what was a challenge I've faced and what was a travel experience I've
dwelled upon? That was definitely when I got robbed in India in the middle of the night.
I was sleeping in my hotel room and I was in a hotel where there were no other foreigners
because I wanted to stay where the locals were staying. Someone came into my room, watched
me sleep and stole a lot of my valuables including my camera with a lot of pictures on it. In
the end I did not care so much about the items that were taken. It was the fact that someone
came into the place I was supposed to feel save and comfortable, watched me sleep and
could have done anything. I was so close to booking a flight and ending my trip. I was
five months into a ten month trip at that point and what a mistake that would have been.
I was just so angry, frustrated and scared. However, I got through it and learned form
it. This situation has made me a better traveller and more aware person.
Brian P says that when he graduates he is going to Greece. I think that is a great idea.
Greece has the best food, hands down. Greece has the best food out of all the countries
I have been to, and I am Italian and have been to Italy. Most people assume that Greece
is a country that is expensive to travel throughout,. and I would have to disagree. Of course any
country can be expensive, but you can do Greece on a budget beacause I have done Greece on
a budget. When I was staying on Santorini, I spent twenty euros a night for a fantastic
room with a fantastic balcony and spectacular room. It came with its own kitchen so I could
cook my own food. It was really good. I was also in Greece during low season at the beginning
of June and things were significantly cheaper. I would recommend going during low season.
Also, going with someone else will cut expenses. I was with two other people, so all of our
expenses were cut in three. This saved a lot of money, especially on accommodations. We
also cooked a lot of our own food. Many of the guesthouses came equipped with a kitchen,
so we would cook two out of three meals each day and that saved a lot of money. I would
highly recommend going to Greece. The food is great and the people are very friendly.
You can island hop and each island has someone very different to offer. Greece is a country
I highly recommend traveling throughout.
