Mats/Morgan Band - Min Häst
Today's exercise
Min Häst by Mats and Morgan Band
Good, fun, smooth, rocking. If you will.
We're sitting here in the blue room, and we're going to do our drum exercises.
What do you have in store today, Morgan?
Today we're going to play a little with the kick drum.
But we're going to play on the snare drum first,
different patterns, for example a pattern like this.
That is the base.
At least one could say that.
The idea is that one would hit arbitrary hard hits.
And then play the kick drum a 16th after those hard hits.
So, on this pattern it would be like this.
Or I could put the kick drum a 16th before the hard hits.
Then it'll be like
So what one does is that one taps the hi-hat
and then come up with different..
And a 16th after the hard hits, the kick drum comes.
And a 16th before.
So the exercise is a principle, one can do it whichever way they want.
It doesn't take much for me to explain the principle
but later one could play as many variants on this as they'd like.
One could even make comps out of this, just play the same thing..
That pattern, and then the bass drum a 16th after
and if I move my hand to the hi-hat, something magic will happen.
That just occured through moving my arm over here.
It's just an exercise that grew into a comp,
I didn't think of the comp, it just came out from the exercise.
By moving one of your hands.
Yes exactly, I didn't have to do anything else.
I can give more examples on that, if I play..
Kick drum a 16th after (the hard hits)
And the left hand here
So if one has a bassist, one could ask him to play on every kick drum hit,
and suddenly one gets a tune.
One gets a pop-song, then.
Do you have any more exercises?
No, it's just to think of the principle is enough.
Play snare hits, hard hits. Kick drum a 16th, and
prior or after,
and maybe move the left hand to the hi-hat
Alright.
We've got record recommendations as usual.
What kind of records do you have today?
Today, I chose to bring Captain Beefheart, which is an
incredibly cool person, and a big source of inspiration to me.
He's a singer and an artist
He paints pictures these days, he doesn't record music anymore, but
the records still exist, and everyone should buy them.
It's a sort of carp, that he wears on his head.
Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band
Trout Mask Replica.
I think the music is incredibly cool
and.. I don't know how to explain.
Is there anything particular about the drum play?
Well, everything's peculiar
I think the way he's made the music is peculiar,
he sings peculiarly, and there's nothing like it.
Tough to digest for the general public.
Yeah.
Next record, it's still Captain Beefheart.
It's quite similar to Trout Mask, but even better in my opinion.
A simply spectacular record.
Okay, next?
If you ask me, that is.
Spotlight Kid
This one's much simpler
There's more lap steel, and rather straight-forward actually,
but still Beefheart's voice and the whole package.
Sweet.
Thanks for those recommendations.
Didn't you have.. Can't you do that one hand snare roll?
