As a former police officer, I'm often asked,
whether the police can stop people
on the street for no reason.
The general answer is no.
In order for the police detain you,
they have to least have what the law calls reasonable suspicion
that you're engaged in criminal conduct.
If they detain you and search you
without reasonable suspicion, I can go into court
and get the search thrown out.
But if you consent to that search, all bets are off.
You have waived your constitutional rights.
And now your attorney may not be able to successfully challenge
that search in court.
