Washington D.c. History And Cartograph - 1892

Hey everyone, Adam Shaw here from Bravura Media Company. And today we have a special treat for you. It is a vintage pictorial map of Washington D.C. produced in 1862. If we look at this map we can obviously see that they went to a great length of detail creating this map. The architecture, the perspective in this map is what really defines and sets itself away from other maps of Washington D.C. As you can see this is the Washington Monument, it is perfectly constructed on this map to give perspective where the buildings are in relation to the monument. If we take a look to the left of the monument, we have the executive mansion or also known as the White House. And as you can see in it's early days, Pennsylvania avenue is almost bear. There is hardly any construction, buildings anything around the executive mansion. If you zoom out, we have the capitol. Beautiful architecture, great detail, look at the different columns. It's quite amazing looking at this. And obviously you can see capitol hill is raised up on a hill, right here. You can see the definition of elevation. So definitely a cool little map. We can even see the ports along the Potomac. We have ships stopping right on the coast. Riverboats. Very excellent detail. This looks like a garden of some sort. Lets see if we can find out what that is. This map has a legend at the bottom and it goes directly vertically corresponding to the written passage, lincoln square. I'm not sure that is Lincoln Square. But as you can see the Capitol is right here, if we go down it will list the Capitol right at the bottom. So very useful legend down at the bottom. I'll give you the example for the White House. White House right here, go down, lets see. Executive mansion, white house right there. Presidents grounds, I'm sure this is in terms of the presidents grounds. Okay so, oh wow! Look at that. Even detailed on the map are some crewers, rowing crew. That's pretty cool.
