Film... it slows me down the cameras
themselves...
inspire me because each camera sounds different, each camera feels different
the when you ask people why they shoot film
that primary answer always seems to be like the look you know I love the look
of film
and while that certainly applies to me, I can honestly say
that I like HOW it makes me shoot and
WHY it makes me shoot as much as I like the look.
( ( GOOD COUNTRY MUSIC ) )
( ( GOOD COUNTRY MUSIC ) )
( ( banjos rocking ) )
the first time I shot film
was on a Hasselblad 501 cm and I'd started in school and you had to do
a film class
and so I got it on and remember holding it and looking down into the camera
it was a waist level viewfinder and I was like oh my gosh this is completely
different like
not saying it's better or worse but just all the sudden you know I just done this
zoom lens right through this
and of course on the Hasselblad only a 12 shots per back on and instead blasting away
like it was when I was learning has like
Wow me to be really careful
and just looking through like a medium format camera would
looking at the ground looks at how different everything looked
for a while even when I wasn't shooting I would just walk around with my camera
just like pointing at things like
wow that looks so cool and wow that looks so different
and that's one of my favorite things about shooting film is there's so many
different
camera types and while the cameras and everything I think some I think the camera
tapes can inspire you to shoot differently
like if you have a waist level viewfinder all the sudden you're framing
a different if you have a square
you know you see different shots or if you have a rangefinder where you're not
seeing any the depth of field you're seeing
everything in focus all the sudden composition become so important because
you're not looking at a blurred image up the lineup
everything and all all of a sudden i'm looking at the images I was about to make
in a completely different way the
I'm Stephen DeVries and I'm an editorial photographer
here in Birmingham Alabama and I do mostly editorial work, I
do some weddings as well but within my editorial work I specialize in a
food, travel and portraiture on and you know within that I do fashion
lifestyle and stuff but
I yes I saw she didn't next year
digital comic films always been my favorite and I just captures light in
different ways and its allies
and to me they're both tools that but having uses Batman films just
always been where my heart is gone Darby for budget reasons
um as a as a photographer just soreness
outside like the physical activity film it makes me she differently
do
and then you know on top that changes the way they interact with clients
whether it's
a travel assignment working with a Shetland the sheen wedding portrait
it slows me down a lot me to connect with down my Mustang back to the camera
all day
on and I can really back in a motion to connect with them in a way that allows
me to take the photos that I wanna take
I it to me much stronger than I can do digital
with them I can see everything from syntactic sandwiches might mean camera
which is shooting a 67 the perfect format for a magazine page without any
cropping
actually square format I can even she white lights and she also align
see have all the different formats that are no one that changed the way that you
think about images change the way we think about storytelling through your
images and when you go into an assignment
and to travel assignment that can include two important really going to it
you can think about is seen
and think about how the white much in a wide shot gonna read the scene
and housing and translate that seemed to the years in the people that are
reading the story it really really changes the conversation how you catch
me
the
yeah
man why I shoot film car
Anna water reasons probably I am
I started on film it's something I've been
10 it comes with my whole life always had a little pull reuter
Kodak camera something like that and I
just the the processor
up shooting in then on where you get that film back and see the surprise and
see what I shot as always just been a
arnold's really fun experience for me and then
and school on college shooting
com dumb but first a serious a
film SLR and
was shooting older tow truck black and white film
c41 process a black-and-white film and
that's kinda what I really learned on and is getting that back in being able
to
to see them as I made on film I might never
just done anything quite like that than any other
in any other medium for it any other format that a shot so
yeah films awesome themes
are
is awesome as I could a good depth to it like a way to Amherst
that disorders doesn't seem to have gets the images that a bummer really awesome
had like a lot kneeling in like 20 and then you know later discovered that
both the moment that although for villages
I just don't get it at like excited about the dole images
or parity like by getting new whole camera
the bill ever I don't know I skip about it there when I shoot
a role some just get really excited about it I just
I just don't but that's only work
but I've grown man when the course things to me is that people in a min
they felt the Darby they really care what they're doing
today will ship something that they have to put more parents do
but they get a better result from it it makes
you know me really excited to go out there and
great some but I really care urge
my name's Padre and my wife and I have a small production company here in
Birmingham
we do a lot of weddings we do use some music videos and commercials to
and we kinda carved out a niche for ourselves doing
%uh a mix %uh eight-millimeter film and
digital video I shoot film because it had something
to especially the leading to the issue debt weekend get
any other way we tried on filter is on
kinda post production processes to mimic that look
really nothing looks like film and
when we show the work with you to arise due to potential clients
on the CNN is just looks different from the work and other people are going out
there
I love the warm colors in a stock buy-back to crown
100 as you like to try it the year
200 ASA absolutely love that film
love how rich the blacks are love a smooth gradation through all the crazies
just a wonderful some stuff we shooting film he makes you consider a little more
carefully
%uh seen here me to capturing the way lands hitting
unjust everything about it because you know debt
you have three minutes on this role separate
unit had burned 50 seconds on it on the shuttle flight
you know something I can't use this application
client and I feel like that we see an opportunity here
and so on tight end issue
a little bit longer takes when shooting film
on just because and have been so careful
find the shot and one that
when a stark warning I don't really want to stop
so so
the since the film's we've got and
has hired first place it was one
daughters for
for additional pointe shoes first girl
time as a graphic designer and so when actually
to split into shopping you know
vintage out there
before their eyes before there's actions
something I
our stuff
okay yes
way well at the time I had hell
poor on that's it
us for help years cooler so
took me awhile to realize battery for
to get from for answer to shoot
it jus intrigue me
beyond words is amazing tool
and and
what
how much so I I've embraced
instead comments it's there
pay for it
rush
namely hi medium format
she polaroids it's a magical
Fido see it in your activity
they the down him
E
me yeah
so
for the main reasons and come back up the main reason I shoot film
is it slows me down you know
the cameras themselves inspire me
because each camp sounds camera you instead they all have
characteristics
back
speak to I'm
speak to my vision but also feeling form
especially developing
it harder by shoot my kids
I'm get impatient
have got it
got it anticipate shot guess perhaps
week
what happens having be courageous by
when that happens trust everything trust me instinct and that
poor tile for
love back *** work all around
she all CA
see this were racist
that's
that's why
mom and
E
saying K
in
name any film be
domain me
me mad
its
so we ran scott cook who runs this RV park here in Colorado
enough lol we're dealing in a he's a shooter fashion photography back in the
day and he shot them course
and he was %ah saying how much you love kodak and everything so I he wanna be a
camera but a
helical sup to say guy where you take photos are taken photos because or
something else
I well it was there was a of course if you use the
the Kodachrome would be called really high and stuff but nobody could go
here to send american that *** called but
I use tactical all tags eg bought myself what I would do is
I woulda under expose it and push it so that doesn't get both for details
dark but
actually digital kinda makes you ladies know I do it doesn't make sure ways
with your lawn mower cameras do all the work too
but like Ansel Adams re tagged as:
dared to do well as manipulation in his head and then I'm
in the dark so some great stuff
on as far as I know being a better photographer would you say
with the same you notice your better photography show films
you get to see your concentrating on all the details
digital you take pictures well I can fix it dark her
for voters
bottom
it was exciting
me is like companies do you feel like you know the whole lot of film
that to me is like of
you know one of the great things about having a large
film come tonight we do we're be integrated summer
capability
motion picture found and an increase
can only be opened
also decreased the grain
the time was just perfect couple years ago
we're able to produce
quarter for 100
60
Aktar around generate great
which increased her
interest
yeah D's
these
means
on day
means windy hyman leading importer
photographer here why she 100 percent now
she on Kodak color film
I love Kodak Ektar temperature 800
in me sack fillers apply
asians here sky p
really right fiber colored I
he'd their work on it yet
watched yeah
me issue care by home
getting the I okay
where years
well hands he may collide look great
money mister
and I'm in Tulsa Oklahoma I'm a film photographer
and I A shoot film because
its for me its easy it stays out of the way
its silence part of the equation that makes everything work um
I feel like if I can just pick up a film camera
I can begin the Nikon p and I wrote riots
go out in to shoot there's nothing
that's going to separate me from my client for me moment
so I i'm I don't connect with digital
anything I'm miss this mechanised
and when I play I would much prefer playing an acoustic piano
then a digital you know would be that way with tired
I love the fact that it allows me to be
I guess in my emotions who
camera it allows me to stay in the moment there's no LCD screen that
is demanding that I take a look at it every second of the day
you know he keeps me to film keeps me there
its minimum like it has sold like it alive I love those qualities other
with easy for me to get into film because I just call home
but everyone has a father or grandparents mother the
some old film camera in the house yeah doesn't cost a thing
to get the camera go up by couple rolls
go
start shooting Bruce so out both from the reasons why she
easy its here right
alive
Sheen film since
be another 15 years old and a so my dad
Olympus camera which key players back benso do
naturally took pictures at each other been transworld yet
awesome so that's another thing that the tire being mentally senator pursue it
mourned
getting to like the technical aspects we to darken class
in this the love that yes I did on the past missus like nothing is its
you can help it here over K
touch its okay hmm he start taking pictures just the CM
and minimum a good you just Paris is here
Nena by it changes your own technique is so take great photographs
but it changes the entire you approach finding the photo
you know finding the image that you want to create very few people
liked all the provisional as structure shot
they have a story where exactly how they want in these go out and execute
something that's already in the head and but even people that do that I think the
majority of attire
his discovery and how you see the world
in that one split-second and
recognizing and taking a picture did okay so
I was a Dodgers game and his
star checkmate or something like that concerning
year which basically do like Isakson anniversary day
the survey is right they do fireworks for the Saturday
and make after the game they open up the outfield every comes down
to Santa you like to lick the spoon only fair to help cool it saying LCM
anderson et
StarTek Inc has a prayers I
this is so meaning Anna
down and the crowd was almost as bright as the fireworks all their phone cameras
business me in a like a fun up there
video a then I get a ring
try again later this year like full blown out there like
do look it up some blue screen that beautiful
of cornish game in there like senator a basic level prior to going is missing
everything
in break the majority of people there were doing the same thing
be you know there's a twenty thousand people a stadium
in Lake 15,000 shared on Facebook
the lake here they got out others Google afterwards Dodger Stadium fireworks
you pick I people like upsets me
Lake many people take more photographs today
in history but they don't really appreciate what they're getting
home
%uh
looking down the cameras digital on this whatever have a second year
the second you go like this: waiting for something to happen and actually use the
United just a click click click
the likelihood only fifteen shots ***
we r we divide did they get a going home yes I'm tapping
you miss me yeah you know and
the playing in the film like yes close care in the world bread
you know page looking for focusing
so both eyes Haverhill now and I had to fix your then all said
you ready you're always ready he was he read
I K its closer MacBook focus
this guy %uh
still here you hit that he didn't like by just got that moment when they got me
if I was
go through the other over to use any yeah he did you look down
and I i only to see it because I know it's there and it's permanent only
shared immediately
to this kid got cation I it's like now
I got that it's there I know exactly I got the shot
is a cat bond issue discipline as you like
yeah I only got 30 shots being a teacher for me check out
and then you taking in you just know how good it can be just like
up before you click the shutter to go click click click click click that by
removing
you like not make changes make this better not much change it
and then you take a shot where he just clicking Like business-like thing like
okay we know it
you know I just took like 15 shots
I I think I got it wait let me check
in in you had a moment but some you
you really look see Lance in use but do you really wanna make sure you got it
while you're shooting
Sharon in in photography for the first year to you
digital rocks because I learned
it's not seen this film but you're still learning how to use a camera surely
I credit digital with making
allow me to fall on monthly tight be and then
this film like I was
I was never saddest the guy was never like love my father I love my did your
fashion a narrow toys like this
skating about it doesn't look right and every time I see an image in something
on
tumbler online or something I really really really like
nine times out of 10 it was film
image and make this is getting out
shortly this is ridiculous why am I trying so hard
and spending so much time attempting to you
recreate something that I like 1i just
shooting it could be this scene shot
it could be the scene lighting it could be the theme Dec situation
I will every single time film
over vigil every time matter how much I denied you
usually get it close I will always she's the film image
he was just late I got the the SAT Reasoning
screw this week I'm just going to go I'm just gonna go try my hand at this
one out bot Narsi and I
just members but in the role and
and then and then getting the rollback mine
I'll crap you know he but
the exact same thing only it's done
in you know I mean its medium format obviously in
she and then it just kinda
spiraled from there
I'm first put a camera about to have years ago
I'm estar digital and quickly have traded
and about three months after I started shooting my friend ask our
wasn't awesome photographer I miss you seen gotten conducts
start using her contacts and I'm paying
after that I just couldn't stop sitting down I'm kinda took over
everything I did so I'm still hire a cheater
came about eighty percent film by it yeah
can change again it's hard to say actually I really
I liked it a lot making has a lot of potential and there's a lot uses for it
but
on I mean obviously song looks better
like if the way and come back it
it works for me but it's more the process I
am when I look in my contacts Lake I see completely differently than I do and I
look through digital camera
Celtics for me more beginning to end
my pictures come out so much better just because processor when I started I
learned on digital
and I feel like I am just kinda shot just to shoot
and it wasn't LA for shot a film camera
that I realize that I was actually paying attention to how it was composing
an israeli President
I was actually thinking about what I was trying to portray
in my photography adam has suggested
shooting changing changing and I mean I got something no meaningful and
worthwhile and that was even expressing my liberty
mine
pirated on on I shoot film because well I started
I learned on top so I am that'll
I and now I learner
film I learned in high school shooting them team at by tonight for under
and I just love I never gonna take everyone learned it had time kinda
fell in love with their the contract and you via a darker
like Tyler watching at work come to life and Nana
when did you know came out I I went into that just like
noonan's cheaper and I just never loved my images
as I like I magnin compose an image I create an image but
that lie just wasn't there and silent back Tom
homes for years ago now have her back II
that I can create in damage like there's something living in natural light there
something
alive and breathing when I actually fell which I to stop
when I shoot digital I mean I'm and
I'm in no way one additional haters like I i get
I I some there are some people out there blow my mind
shooting digital I that permeates just right Irish
for me my my are comes through the creation
and using gonna the way different stocks capture lightened
at it speaks to me
ashey film is its
its there's so much more to it you get a digital camera and
take pictures so flat did in it is a matter which you
what can we use use film cameras are so much more like to isn't
30 quality the colors better than renditions better
the resolutions better II he added
take your time focusing compose so shot yet
not upset I'm a better shot you never take additional games
shooting away 10,000 images time so its
it's a better workflow its better images its
which is the better way to do things I there's
so many more stops dynamic range are so much more resolution his stuff you can't
get
can even be in the nicest disappear box
if they're really getting the shooting
film mom you know two years that they really got into digital
and I just want to learn more about the tire been I think film
took it to the next level for me to learn something at felt like I just
platter out shooting digital had a really feel
super excited sure anymore and when
but started showing film I remember getting my first medium format camera in
the box
kahi open it up like oh my gosh but as I don't know how to word it or anything
for that actor was my first film ever shot and a super colorful
mom I love the way that'll work than actually still use while others
pictures from a very first role that a shot has like my main
better my website everything
what they got him back with the picture on the screen is like
so sharp a sharper than anything I've ever seen before
on picture any red there's gonna go to another
another spot ima tired rear
so I shoved down my main issue weddings I love
bring
more romantic look to weddings instead of just the it's a perfect picture every
time I like imperfection
film gives especially with weddings pretty cool having a
different camera the most people are seeing when you shoot weddings
so it's like they definitely want to come up to you and talk to you good but
that camera and then you get to town
shooting down there always so surprised when you tell me shooting
film and units by Tom like lives better
are not better but but it's a different world I
I dislike pure colors that it does the highlighter their everything
everything for their no where digital
there's only so much that it can hold
the main reason that I would shoe film is because
I feel like that's my personality I like a a little bit more but challenge than
just
shooting way looking the back to the screen like I want to challenge you
and I want that but look I wanna for my
sup apart from other photographers because there's not
especially among government is now a lot of people this year down
by the just getting into it shooting 30 but no matter which 35 millimeters of
number medium format just minutes left
%uh
%uh
%uh
%uh
it
%uh this mcafferty apk app but surely after
mom got married documenting like animals breaking the law
and then my sector behind me
in this little-known other camera
week after the only memories I have are like
and act like yeah
the store picking up some film looking into the camera
taking this honor now
picnics actions to Macau I love these photos are
in pretty rough shape we still have some the negatives
that means we can get them scan become
back good as new one reason why a
film because the cameras like this simple mobile camera thinking
easily repair collapse like pass on
generation
I decided she'd
because we wanted to start a family in any the eight hours at my computer
for every wedding wasn't conducive to being accounted at I wanted to be
I wanted time this down my daughter wanted to understand my wife I wanted
time to pursue
other things like sailing and if ours padlocked my computer it wasn't gonna
happen
film allows me to do the job send it to the lab
and I get back beautiful images that I don't really have to mess with
so I can produce worry that I'm proud to have
without being changed to a computer
film allows me to connect with my clients
I'm not confident looking at the back my screen checking histograms
super worried about Max treasures I can worry about expression I can remember
that connection with the subject I can worry about taking a beautiful
photograph without worrying about the technical part
quite so much people act like film is so difficult but think about your
grandmother used to do it how hard can it be
a certain working with her
p.m. 2005 in I work at a
a film out and and a converted over to digital because films dude
police estimate of me %uh to get rid of older film
whitman and so on her moose or in
going into the different direction doing pure additional stuff
I'm I notice that was the same stuff you know same winning shots
same poses same the
senior shots and in it was mainly seniors
families weddings I'm working on a film where
a notice differences in the typeof
shots that are sent to us it's it's more artsy it up bill like the
that the photographers personality comes a loved one film
I'm gonna think that has a lot to do with it what you have to do in order to
achieve film shops I'll you have to wait
you have to slow down film force you to do these things
it took four seeded thing as what it does for me
any filter for the tough talk to you it does the same for them
whenever I shoot film a slowdown capture the image look at in my head
him issue how to make sure everything's ok so we have some shots film
call additionally shooed away all there's like creativity in
in film photography and there's a lot of different looks
I can look at digital photography in there can be different
tire covers but it has him looking I think that has to do with there's only
so many digital cameras on the market right now
and everybody season you know the same campus
northolt are being is are so many protector film in so many different
actor film
cameras that you can get a different look you can get one look with one film
on one camera and then get another look with that same film on different camera
and you can also get a different look with one camera in one type of film
in if you change it film to another type you gonna get a different look
you can't do that with additional unless you go into a
photo editor and change their
and with additional it seems like there's more post-production
would if you're trying to get in the way that you wanna look dinner is actually
shooting in the way that you want to look
so yeah how's you know group maybe so
everything I saw from you know cool skate magazines to
you know to the movies we watch their own down son is used to the section
in the stones and the whaler so on they have a lot to do with you know when I'm
rediscover film again I was like wow that surrounds missin
him up talk to be you know is this textures in the sounds that
in our group saying I'm at Oliver's and the movies now watch is that you know
just has a slight
cinematic like you know mature latina
so yeah Inspiron actually load my camera cuz I know I have a certain amount shots
to get the shot tiny to slow down to pose correctly
now take my time and just get the shop you know
i really wanna get considered just blast away
in picking view actually slow down and take my time in trying to capture home
come to me bring is like the most important part
the entire process com you know so when I'm shooting film I know that
from the darkness point two lines point the whole range is going to be there
thomas hasn't scared you to it and
you know the the grain is too much textured
do not print that this looks amazing with his hands as
depth to it I was mature look to it and risking getting round
the opening is super important like that final stage
processing you were not present someone
free and you know they can't see it right there and i'm having a look on the
computer
lookin the on Facebook for anything to see it you know through like
unkown reminders something that's not corrects the 1i have the pre
you know there's no variable in their system here's the present in they can
see it so it's kinda
be presenting to the world the final print are
I love my work so on you think it's super ***
founders captures the like no other medium
so it started with the film mainly because my mom
%uh broke homie old film camera
and I just want too many years CVS or Walgreens picked up the very familiar
role
read the manual make sure the year little mark was over 20
took the first pitch
so if housing thirty five-millimeter get 36 shots
and just 36 chances to get a good shot not only are you changing the number
brains that you're shooting you changing the
bill actual building I guess super shallow
just accept I don't have to worry about white balance
I do have two pages and lighting situations there is a right way to do it
the wrong way to do it
and sometimes it's nice to master
the right way to do it but then you become complacent board yep step away
from that maybe even outside the box
break the rules get some cool images and find out you develop
the three biggest things for me when shooting films composition exposure
and like quality if those are the only things I have to pay attention to
it makes shooting the breeze I can connect with my subject
to me there's more you have more relationship
with yourself your client tools are using
whatever camera may be whatever bill maybe you have a relationship with it
the amount of work you have to put into that image
before you take it is a directly relational to
what you get back from I'm
standard the give-and-take relationship if you give your all
gonna get back some pretty amazing stuff I think that's what people are going
keep shooting down
so what we've discovered
after talking to all these two for photographers about why these film
is that although film has a unique look and feel it's just what allows them to
tell their story
capture life the way they see it so long live film
long yeah E
got a new chain yeah
mu jeans Gaia alone you know many
from the house this has been going on like proposed
billion you a
do it well a cool
yeah I
but listening any
I'm
I'm
Graham one has a high yield very beautiful
me alright good good expression yeah over here
we'll make this just even a little better in the world
we just %ah dade real knowledge great
Mon yeah
embracing many
well there's nothing to lose yeah
especially when there
to make a cash to get my the with open to people about
yeah
and
why did with their mothers not will vary the the whole the book a markup for now
available I shoot film because people are more likely to take their clothes
off
the no its not do you think is the most basically action
I kept what on mtv2
code I'm in it for me I'll what up internet
yeah the Euro your brand
represent
streak
for but where long telomeres
game in the rain haha now collects heavy CN
on the non-action radio glad I'm home
you know right
home
go
right nominee
the whole
yeah Raheny
yeah
you know very cool the glass the yeah
many but the team Jeff and
now I E
the all 0 whereby
you know about by funny movie
but thank you do but a
the town of this is actually gonna win hunter
