While walking through the city
we came across a peculiar ice cream parlour
called Ice Palace.
The ice cream flavours here are quite interesting.
They all seem so innocent!
Alrighty, we got ourselves 12 different ice cream scoops
but it's not your usual ice cream.
This first one is shark noodle flavour
Jesus, there's even some tiny pieces
of this, uh, thing in the mix.
It's super salty, but not too bad, actually.
I'm entering the magical world of weird ice cream flavours
by way of cheese.
Tastes kinda normal, just like ordinary ice cream.
Cheese doesn't really add anything special to it.
Even though it's the savoury kind.
OK, now it's time for miso soup flavour. Let's see.
Well, that didn't taste like miso. It was good though.
Now the mysterious 'Dracula' flavour
supposed to taste of garlic,
tastes of cardboard instead.
And the next flavour is...
cow tongue.
A very popular dish
There's some tiny chunks, if they're cow tongue chunks
then the whole thing's super weird.
Now 'unagi', the japanese eel.
Usually comes in the form of sushi,
and the unagi sushi is served with
a very distinctive, spicy sauce poured over it.
And that does a weird thing to my brain,
tasting sushi while eating ice-cream, which itself is sweet.
White shrimp flavour
Yup.
This is actually the first one
that tastes just like what it says on the label
Now the wasabi flavour
so
the Japanese horseradish
Cool, I like this one
I mean you can taste the wasabi in your ice cream,
but for some reason it works.
It's a really good combination, they could be a thing, actually.
Home-made crab
Damn,
this is all super weird
...but weirdly good as well.
Sure, it might taste of crab, but it's pretty decent ice-cream.
Next one up: oyster flavour.
This does NOT work.
You can really taste the oyster though.
Last one in my little collection: coal.
Jesus, I think there might be some actual coal there
There's this weird, uh
crunchy texture to it. Oh God.
But then again - it's not bad!
After all this you need a sip of whiskey
luckily
we have whiskey ice cream.
Yup, that's whiskey.
Turns out you can make ice cream
with virtually anything.
In many cases the suprising combinations were tasty,
in some of them not that tasty.
And to be completely honest
the oyster flavoured ice cream
it's not a thing you come across on every street corner
here in Japan.
We really did try hard
to find something that weird,
weird even to Japanese people we spoke to.
