We've all heard about food miles,
but how bad can it be? The typical basket of Australian groceries
loops the earth twice
to get to you.
Add packaging and processing and you can see why food makes up a third
of a typical household's carbon footprint. No matter where you live
you can cut your carbon by growing your own food. Plus,
it's cheaper, fresher and healthier. Any patch of sunlight is big enough to
grow basic veggies and herbs.
No space is too small. You can start your garden in anything, from old food
containers to pots and crates.
It's a sunburnt country,
so why not at least grow some of your own food. Better still, go the whole hog
team up with your neighbours and start a rooftop garden.
